Apocalyptic Ambition: Kiev-US Nuclear Deal May Lead To Catastrophe

missingsky102·Published on May 19, 2014

Political turmoil and violence in Ukraine's east are not the only challenges facing the country right now. Energy supplies are a major concern, and Kiev has decided to use US nuclear fuel at its atomic plants which constitute a major part of the country's power grid. RT's Irina Galushko explains why many fear Kiev is jeopardizing safety for politics.

In order to alleviate energy dependence on Moscow, the coup-imposed government in Kiev has resurrected a contract with a US company to supply fuel to Ukraine's nuclear power plants. Using US fuel rods was banned in 2012 due to dangerous incompatibility.

The rivalry for nuclear fuel supply to Ukraine between Russia's nuclear fuel cycle company TVEL and America's Westinghouse took a twist when in April 2014, shortly after the armed coup, Kiev signed a new deal with America's leading nuclear fuel producer, Westinghouse Electric Company, instead of the Russian TVEL company that has been supplying fuel rods to Ukraine for years.

NATO Team Counsels Ukraine on Atomic Reactor Safety
NATO specialists recently advised Ukraine on the safety of its atomic reactors, amid concerns about spreading instability in the country, Reuters reported.

A team of alliance civilian experts traveled to the country in April at Kiev's request to provide recommendations on options for enhancing protections around key infrastructure sites such as nuclear plants and gas pipelines, the news service reported on Wednesday.

Some independent analysts have voiced concern about the potential for a nuclear plant meltdown occurring if the electricity that powers reactors' cooling systems is cut off or plant personnel flee their posts due to nearby fighting in the country.

REAL UKRAINE ISSUE: ROGUE REACTORS AND PUTIN'S 'NO-BAMA' ZONE IN CRIMEA
"To be sure, the 1986 Ukrainian nuclear disaster of Chernobyl was in nuclear weapons-equivalent terms a very large-sized nuclear device, probably releasing 130 kilograms of very highly enriched uranium and plutonium, as well as other long-lived deadly nuclides. In very approximate terms this was equivalent to about 15 times the radiological inventory of the 1945 Hirsoshima A-bomb. Economic damage to date from the Chernobyl disaster which requires a 2827 square kilometer total exclusion zone, is variously estimated at $350 -- $500 billion, with at least 30 000 fatalities to date across Europe.

Ukraine is therefore a deadly storehouse of dangerous reactors, including the crippled Chernobyl reactor which as yet, to date, does not have a final entombment sarcophage. Nuclear wastes, in Ukraine, are widely dispersed and poorly accounted for. The country could or might have a certain number of operational or repairable smaller-sized nuclear warheads, the radioactive materials of which also makes them prime assets for the production of "dirty bombs", that is non-explosive nuclear waste-dispersing weapons. This is serious business, so Washington's diplomatic suicide-run to derail nuclear cooperation with Russia should raise alarms for anyone genuinely concerned about moving the globe towards a peaceful future.

Calling for a Ukraine No-Fly Zone and 'War for Crimea', as mindless political clowns such as John McCain have already done, is pure madness.

But madness is all Washington seems to be serving up these days."

The fearless leader of North Korea is busy writing books. Take that, Putin! You can fish bare-chested, but can you author "lots of works"?

Kim Jong Il Authors Lots of Works for Development of Juche-oriented Literature and Arts
Pyongyang, May 15 (KCNA) -- Leader Kim Jong Il authored lots of works for the development of literature and arts for several decades, clearly indicating the way for the Juche-oriented literature and arts to follow.

Inheriting President Kim Il Sung's idea of the Juche-oriented literature and arts, Kim Jong Il authored "On Establishing the Party's Monolithic Ideological System in the Field of Art and Literature", "On the Effective Embodiment of the Party's Monolithic Ideology in Literary and Artistic Works" and other works, clarifying the revolutionary nature and mission of the Korean literature and arts and indicating tasks and ways for developing them into a powerful weapon for the party ideological work.

He set forth a policy of bringing about a radical turn in the literature and arts in the course of adapting the immortal classics personally created by the President during the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle for various forms of literary and art works and clarified issues arising in its implementation.
