A new definition of "Bad Timing"

http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/culture-lifestyle/140725/david-duchovny-starring-bizarre-nationalistic-commercial-russ

David Duchovny, known for his roles as Fox Mulder on The X Files and Hank Moody on Californication, must not be into geopolitics, because he's chosen this moment, with all the controversy surrounding Russia and Ukraine and the downed Malaysia Airlines passenger jet, to appear in a commercial for Russian beer.

Not just any beer commercial, mind you. A beer commercial titled "You have something to be proud of," which is about the feeling of national pride that Duchovny would (does?) feel toward Russia.

It's particularly interesting because it's not clear whether Duchovny considers himself Russian or Ukrainian. He's Scottish on his mother's side. Some biographies online say he's descended from "Russian Jews" on his father's side. His grandmother, Julia, immigrated to the United States from Poland. His grandfather, Moshe, immigrated from Ukraine in 1918. In a 2013 interview, Duchovny said his grandfather was from Ukraine but likely spoke "Russian and Yiddish."

1. Or great timing, depending on one's POV.

- Or, politics.

4. Exactly. More than ever we need to be reminded that we are more alike than unalike.

7. I thought DD's father was a Russian Jew...

and his mother is Scottish. In any case, he has every right to be proud of his heritage and just because Putin is jack ass doesn't mean we hate all Russians or part Russians. That shit is too 1950s and we are way beyond it.

12. If we must hate Russians because of their leader, how many friends did the USA lose at the start

of this century?

Hating people, especially ones you don't even know is so stupid and a waste of time, yet so many on DU throw the word around like they think it will impress someone.

Why don't people try something constructive once in awhile?

8. Some times I have to just sit and wonder...........

How harshly should I judge the Russian people because of Putin's aggression?
How harshly am I judged because of George W. Bush's Shock and Awe?

Is it simply that some cosmic rule demands that the world has at all times at least one mad man risen to power?

13. It's not just Shock and Awe. It's also firebombing Dresden,

bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the slaughter of Native Americans, supplying the gas that Saddam used to kill the Kurds, the needless slaughter of the Iraqi army in our first war with Iraq, slavery and internment; a seemingly endless list.

People with history like ours should be careful in their accusations.
