(14,177 posts)I have been told by more than one person at least 3 people that they think I am an aspie. But, I pretty much blew that off as just teasing. I do tend to be a bit proceedure orientated unless it makes no sense, then I just can't process, I mean I seriously can't understand what I am supposed to do.
If I ever get tested and it turns out I have it. I don't think I will tell anyone. There are too many people who think instead of oh it's really cool she has adapted, raised a family, and is going to college now. They will instead make jokes about my mental state.

(11,012 posts)check it out. There may be some coping measures out there for you that will help you around the things that don't make sense.
I sympathize. I have an autistic stepson (you'd be amazed at how many otherwise seemingly intelligent people think that is a criminal illness) and a son who shows a lot of Aspergers traits. He refuses to even consider the possibility, and if he is slower to make his way to where he needs to go because of the inabiltiy to understand nuance and such, at least he's headed in the right direction.
The only reason I want a diagnosis is so that he can get the help he needs, if he needs it, when I am no longer there to smooth his way.
BTW, they are doing away with tags like Aspergers, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). In the future, Aspergers, PDD, and others will be referrd to as Austic Spectrum Disorders -- which is really what they are.
I have a child who was diagnosed with ADD when he was in the first grade. We decided against meds, but by his 2nd grade in school, we (Dr, school teacher and counselors) realized that we had no choice. Took meds from grade 2-6. Off meds in the 7th grade. He did great, in spite of everything. When he started college, he had a mini episode (felt suicidal) and independently checked himself into a center to get help for a weekend. We learned at that point that he had been misdiagnosed as a child and indeed had Asberger's. He pulled himself together and got back to school, dropping one class (a 6-hour Eng comp class, as he had claimed a writing major.) He picked up that class the nest semester and made an A in it. Anyway, he did graduate from college, a hair from cum laude. With lots of love and patience from his parents and siblings, he has grown into a wonderful young man. Of all my children, he is the one that I am most proud of. And his siblings would probably say the same thing if asked. And he loves cats.
