Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Scottish Independence

Published on Sep 14, 2014

Scotland is about to vote on whether to secede from the UK.
There are solid arguments on both sides.
But none of that makes bagpipes good to listen to…or does it?

We drove from Glasgow up to Inverness and back down to Edinburgh in a weeks time. I was really surprised to find a Hong Kong Style Chinese restaurant in Inverness.. Never tried the haggis but sure had some great dumplings in stir fry noodles!

invented bowling, fly fishing, golf and the industrial revolution. The Scottish Enlightenment, Scottish finance, soldiers, art and political genius made the British Empire. The Scots don't need the fucking English or their degenerate aristocracy. They never did. It's always been the other way around.

Personally I would like to see Scotland stay as both nations would be stronger for it, but I definitely would want England to treat Scotland with more respect and diligence to their concerns.

Thanks for the thread, jakeXT.

Even to people they don't like. In the case of the English, Scottish hospitality goes so far as to include intermarriage even though they still don't like them.

both the yes and no camps on I'm started reading some news articles from Scotland. If I was a Scot I don't know how I would vote. I've seen compelling cases made from both sides

One of the more compelling no arguments is Scotland gets higher per capita NHS funding then the rest of the UK and the SNP has not stated how they will replace those funds in the event of Independence is that the case?

Here in Edinburgh we're fed rubbish and rhetoric, not facts. We have to go to private blogs and forum articles like the one about Scottish independence jobs exodus to make sense of it all.

It's all gone mad with ignorant passion!

Good Job, John Oliver! I loved his attempt with Scottish accent impersonations, fairly decent job of it.

... but no means "not right now". Just ask the Quebecois.

Get it over with, otherwise you'll never hear the end of it.

The nation-state is history, anyway. You'll still be ruled by the same overlords (like the rest of us).

With "independence", though, you won't have to put up with Charles the Tampon or Cameron the Smug.

If it dissuades the Royals from prancing around in kilts, then the rest of the world would be eternally grateful.
