Political Insider: Victim of 'Ruthless Ambition' turns author

And now there’s “Ruthless Ambition: The Rise and Fall of Chris Christie,” by former Assemblyman Louis Manzo of Jersey City, who was one of a large number of political figures (mostly from Hudson County) indicted on corruption charges as a result of the FBI sting Operation Bid Rig. In Manzo’s case, the charges were dropped by a federal judge who did his best to ignore filed complaints about prosecutorial misconduct but left unsaid messages to the prosecution by whittling away their case.

Whenever we'd call U.S. Attorney's spokesman Michael Drewniak about Manzo's accusations, the response was always that it was ridiculous and to just "consider the source."

You would think that this is all about the sting operation, but while it does chronicle some of Manzo’s experiences from the day FBI agents handcuffed him in the summer of 2009, it’s about much more than that. “Ruthless Ambition” is a deep look into the political life and machinations of a governor and former U.S. attorney who had been in the national consciousness as a favorite potential candidate in 2016 to lead this nation. The author makes you believe Christie has more in common with Macbeth than Lincoln or Reagan.

“Ruthless Ambition” begins with the George Washington bridge scandal that appears to have scuttled Christie’s ambitions.

The lion’s share of the book follows Gov. Christie’s career when the 30-year-old lawyer begins his political journey in Morris County with his friend, confidant and fellow legal eagle Bill Palatucci. As governor, Christie gets national attention when Nancy Reagan selects him as a speaker at the Reagan Library in 2011. Every step of the way there are some wiseguy remarks from Manzo that many in Jersey City politics have come to expect.

Manzo is a pretty good interview. Mr. Pakman on the interview-not so good. (when was the last time a NJ Governor was indicted or even charged with a crime? That would be never Mr. Pakman, not "disproportionate to other states"-do your homework)

For a good interview with Manzo go to this link and listen to Marc Lamont Hill interview him: http://www.nj.com/opinion/index.ssf/2014/04/former_assemblyman_is_interviewed_concerning_his_book_about_gov_christie_ruthless_ambition_on_huffpo.html or for a better discussion there's Brian Lehrer's talk with Ryan Lizza here: http://www.wnyc.org/story/making-and-unmaking-chris-christie/

In his searing tell-all, Ruthless Ambition: The Rise and Fall of Chris Christie, former New Jersey State Assemblyman Louis Manzo recounts an extraordinary tale of political ruthlessness, corruption, and greed while also telling the story of how he was caught in the center of one of the most egregious political scandals in modern-day history: the Bid Rig III sting operation, masterminded by the then United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey and soon-to-be Governor Chris Christie. Manzo shows us how the blind ambitions of Christie and his staff centered on capturing a governorship and the patronage jobs that accompany it, then parlaying that office into a shot at the presidency.

for anybody who doesn't yet understand why it's so important for Christie to face justice

Meticulous in backing up everything he says with objective legal documentation, Manzo makes a convincing and disconcerting case for the governor as an unbridled and sinister political figure who made the most of a seriously flawed Department of Justice and overall judicial system to feed his megalomania and desire for power

The Jersey Sting and The Soprano State take an approach that is much more offender focused. In fact, Bob Ingle, who wrote The Soprano State was quite enamored with Christie up until Bridgegate. Manzo's book is important because it gets into the whole crew-Michelle Brown, Ralph Marra, and his buddies Kevin and Charlie and the rest of his thugs who went from the U.S Attorney's office into high paying NJ state jobs as a reward for their carrying out Christie's self-promoting agenda. The fact that these people were making Christie campaign donations while conducting political prosecutions aimed at burnishing his image should alarm any thinking person.
