(6,581 posts)I just posted about this very juxtaposition of images on another forum I frequent. I hope today's photo becomes one of the iconic images of OUR times, much as the Eisenstaedt image did in 1945.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)thought of the 1945 picture.

(8,492 posts)I'd probably leave out the first one. If I remember the story correctly, that sailor grabbed a random nurse and kissed her...without her permission. The second couple looks like they know each other quite well.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)There is so much going on in each.
Love of life.
Love of another.
Passion.
Return of people we love from danger.
End of a war.
And then ... the juxtaposition might just make some right wing heads explode.
Which is like icing on the cake.

(3,251 posts)I thought most people knew that.

(27,787 posts)Down thread, some one mentioned that some female soldiers from 1945 also greeted each other in a manner just like the image on the right, just not in public.

(975 posts)I keep thinking that the question of the OP is a joke, satire perhaps? Why SHOULDN'T it be there? It's a beautiful photo.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)So not a joke.
I took the two images and put them next to each other on purpose. The picture of the two women above appeared in another OP on DU, and I immediately thought of the 1945 version.
And that's why I created the version in the OP.
As I mention up this sub-thread, the two images are iconic for a variety of reasons.
I find it interesting that some seem concerned that in the 1945 version, the couple didn't know each other, and so placing the images next to each other doesn't work.
Actually ... that fact about the couples simply adds to the layers of meaning and comparison in the juxtaposition.
After all, the images look a great deal alike ... and yet there are some very significant differences in the setting and context of each.
Take the 1945 image. There is a huge celebration occurring because WWII is over. There really is no such celebration happening as we leave Iraq.
So I guess my point is that part of the reason the juxtaposition makes sense to me is that the images look very similar, and yet beneath the visual similarities, there are also some very interesting differences.
In the OP, I decided not to try to explain the images, or point out points of comparison, but to let folks on DU feel whatever they wanted when looking at the juxtaposition.
Hope that helps.

(27,787 posts)I used the "doesn't this image belong on the DU home page" line to get people to look at it ... shameless I know ...
But I actually hope that the media places those 2 images side by side ... and shows them to the GOP candidates ... and then asks them what they think about the juxtaposition.
For a long time, the GOP has used manufactured anger against "the gays" because it gave them a political advantage ... I think images like these can help accelerate an end to that.
I think most Americans, seeing those two images side by side, would smile.
Of course the insane right wing base will have exploding head syndrome, but that's good in my opinion.
FedUp_Queer
(975 posts)if we deny the gays exist, they don't.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)Most of the GOP front runners are trying to avoid discussion of things like DADT currently.
The country is moving rapidly forward on this issue, and its losing it political value for the GOP, except with their far right wing base.
In 2000 and 2004, the GOP in the general election found it advantagous to run against "the gays" (within their God, Gun, Gays platform).
I don't think that will fly in 2012.
Perry just tried it, and that was a huge fail. Romney just got embarrassed by a gay vet. Bachmann had an embarrassing moment when a child of gay parents called her out ... and Newt just told some a gay person at some event to "go support Obama".
So I think you are right that the GOP will probably try to pretend there are no gay people this time around and avoid making this one of their primary targets.

(114,615 posts)Of course, the one on the left wasn't voluntary. They had never met and she wasn't the only woman he'd grabbed on the street that day and planted a kiss on. She was just the one the photographer managed to catch.
The one on the right is voluntary and beautiful.
However, guess which one the phobes approve of.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)And they share plenty of underlying aspects ... I mention a few up thread in another response.
And beyond that ... they are also different.
As you note, one was ummm ... "spontaneous" (you said "wasn't voluntary"
, but in 1945, I'm not sure which of those adjectives would fit best. I'm not saying that grabbing the closest women and kissing her is OK, but 1945 is not 2011. Things were what they were in 1945. Regardless ... that image is iconic.
And then the other image, as you note, is actually a real couple.
It is in my mind equally iconic because it is both connected to the 1945 image via the similarities , and then also because of the ways in which it is different.
Imagine an open discussion of the similarities and the differences in the media. I think that would be cool.

It has NOTHING to do with their lives.
I really don't get the knee-jerk hatred, I can't believe how downhill they've gone in the past decade.
Of all things to get worked up about, why this? It just doesn't matter in their own lives.

JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)In my view, part of the reason each image is iconic is not simply the kiss.
End of a war.
Spontaneous passion.
Return of loved ones.
And ... even your point makes the juxtaposition worthy of a discussion, such as 1945 verses 2011.

(27,787 posts)I saw the image on the right here on DU and then immediately thought of the 1945 image because of the visual similarities.
So I used Google to find it.
And while looking at both, the visual similarities, and the many differences if time, context, setting, so on struck me.
I'm really happy folks in DU like it.
