And you'd need to multiply that 125,000 times over to equal what is believed to be the number of stars there. Just the stars, as they were 2.65 million light years ago.

Beautiful! I love learning.

We are not alone - just think about how many millions of stars it is in our own galaxy - and the Andromeda galaxy is double our own galaxy... It is stupid to belive that we are the only sentient spieces out there... And also ignorant... I do belive life exist out there - in all posible forms - from the smallest creatures - not seen by an naken eye - to creatures so mindblowing that we might as well be ants compared to them.. Some wil be on a lower level of knowlegde, but many wil posible be of a greater knowlegde than we posess... The universe is amazing - and we are just at the edge of it all - just tipping our feets into the all (as Carl Sagan said it so mutch better back in Cosmos) waiting for the posiblity to travel to all the marveles who await us out there...

This is the only way "we" humans describe our existence, and therefore ALLL existence, yes? But, what if there are more ways of existence? The state of "we are not alone" is limited even less. Perhaps this is what draws me to science fiction and Star Trek in general. There are some considerations not to be ignored, else we loose out our own process of evolution.

The problem is that we on DU (as far as I'm aware) are just human beings and therefore, any existence is based on living in a 3rd dimensional reality.

All humans think about how life is -inside our own bounderies - but we do know now - that life can be all over the place - even in deep space - and lie dormant for eons - and then just wake up if the posibilities are there to start life again... Some of ours most primitive "animals" or life if you want it - is sturdy as hell - and can survive allmoust everything earth can trow at them - and even then survive an iceage - or more - and then when posible, start to eat, to do everything they do - as nothing have happened... Some of this rather primitive form of life - have even been up in space - on the space-shuttle and exerienced vacum - and came back to life even after that experience...

But this is rather primitive form of life - I somehow doubt we can survive the vacum of space - and then wake up as nothing have happened after waking up again - and we can just wonder what life have experienced out there in space - or if it exist forms of life we do not even know about out there... That be in interstellar space - or on planets all over our own galaxy..

I think the next decade or two would be interesting as we wil discover so mutch out there - even if we still are somewhat "land-locked" on our planet - we might as well discover many more planets around suns who might look like our own planet - we might not discover life, that be primitive or othervice - but it wil be a start - if we discover planets with liquid water - it is just a matter of time before we might as well discover worlds, who have at least our own level of sivilizations - most posible planets whoes life is at least a few centuries ahead of our own... Or maybe even eons ahead of our own..

Hey - it is just 50 years to the first Warp capable ship is going into orbit according to the Star Trek universe - hopefully we can survive that long - withouth the horrible nuclear wars of the 21 century - and turn our attention to make sure our colletive future wil be that mutch better, for everyone... I tink as it is, we are on a cross-road where WE have to shoice our future - a dyspotia where greed rain - and where a tiny elite on top have all the ressourses - or a future where the ressurses is farly given to all of us - and where we can work togheter for a better future - as a whole planet... If we had picked all our ressourses togheter - and all the brains, we would be a great better off than we are today....

I know - Im just a naive dreamer - but I guess im not the only one - to parafrase John Lennon..

.....despite the spelling.

I spent decades of my life with various pro-space organizations, starting with the old L-5 Society, promoting the idea of moving into the solar system, with all the zeal of an evangelist.

These days, I'm working with the Move to Amend movement with the same zeal.

I see no conflict with both worldviews, or with settling space and taking care of the Earth, or of working for peace. If we let our planet become uninhabitable due to the unrestrained greed of people like the Koch brothers or due to nuclear war, we lose our chance at a 'Star Trek' future (Gene Roddenberry's vision) or Gerry O'Neill's vision.

The late, great Bill Hicks expressed it brilliantly:

“Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.”

I know - my spelling is often "off tone" - sadly my grammatical errors is rather clear, as english is not my native language - but I do try And I do hope you forgive me my wrongdoing on english grammar...

I think our future is out there in space - colonizing other planets - travel true deep space to other places - if not exactly to other galaxies - so at least to our own little neck of the universe... Over time as we get to know how to do it - warp drive or FTL engines is theoretical a idea to travel true space in a manner possible for humans....

To work for peace is maybe the best way to make sure we all survive - even if it looks dark a the moment... Capitalism is at it worst - unrivaled stealing and plundering of everyones wealth for a small group of people who believe, for some reason they can do as they please and not paying the consequences when it all fall togheter... They are stupid - arrogant - and live in a bubble the rest of the world have no access to...

I like the idea Gene Roddenberry gave us in his movies and series - a future where our want our tribal ways have been changed to a way of exploring the universe - at least our own little place of the galaxy - in peace - instead of war... I like that idea - and I do have all series and films ever made by the Star Trek universe - even though I HATE the reboot movies, it have not much with the original idea to do really.... But then kids today just want action I guess

Because your posts are always so well thought out so that mere grammar becomes irrelevant.

You can count me a fan, my friend. Rationality trumps grammar, or spelling.

Plus, Diclotican is always very polite, even when one disagrees. That is something we all need to aspire to.

Who cares if your grammar goes amiss? You remain one of the more sane and rational posters here on DU. And I am a huge fan.

I only wish that I had a similar command of argument, albeit in spite of grammar, which is nothing in this context.

You do not have to apologize, my good friend, Diclotican.

Thank you for your kind words Longship, My friend - I do strife for being as polite as I can, even if I strongly disagree with the opponent - but I have experienced in my life, you get better on with other being polite, than to do the opposite.... Even if you are strongly in disagreement - some look at it as a weakness - to be polite - I se it as a weapon where you can express your view in a civilized manner, and if needed hit them hard and brutal with a pointed expression... Polite of course The best way to tell your opponent to go to hell - is when you do it in a way where they look forward to the trip - as some told a long time ago...

Rationality have its benefits, even if the grammar is laking somewhat

I believe there is life elsewhere in the universe. Likely more than we can possibly imagine, but the cruelty of the universe is that we (people alive today) will NEVER greet or communicate with it unless it comes to us first...and given the terrifying capacity of humans to kill and pillage the "other" or out-groups, contact with a vastly superior alien species would likely turn out a lot worse for us than it did for the Native American peoples.

On a totally different thought....imagine trying to explain to a sentient alien intelligence the concept of "property" and "money". Our entire civilization is build around the premises that one meat bag with a pathetic brain relative to what is possible "deserves" or "owns" more than the other pathetic meat bags...when you really stop to think about it, the concept is so limiting and so puny minded that it defies explanation.
