Apparently, in 1998 there was a squirrel off to the left, and the dog went nuts straining on its leash, trying to get that squirrel. Or maybe it was the strongest El Niño ever recorded. Squirrels and El Niños look so much alike.

Anyway, people who are bad at trend analysis, which is an awful lot of people, hear the deniers say, "Look at 1998 compared to this year! There's hardly any change at all. Therefore, global warming has stopped." With proper trend analysis, that does not make sense. But the average person may think it does, and refuse to take any action. We are on a path to experience more warming than at any time since the Permian-Triassic extinction event, the worst extinction event in Earth's history.The many ecological disasters resulting from this may stress human civilization to the breaking point.

Human civilization may collapse . . . because people are bad at trend analysis.
