About 160 dolphins beached in Ibaraki

About 160 dolphins washed ashore on a beach in Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo.

The Japan Coast Guard said it received reports of the beaching from residents of Hokota City at about 6:30 Friday morning.

Local Coast Guard officials later confirmed the presence of the dolphins along a beach in the city.

The dolphins, known as “melon-headed whales," measure 2 to 3 meters long. They are injured and apparently weakening.
