I worked many years for a delivery service and EVERYDAY our supervisor told us to NEVER leave your vehicle running. This is why.

because they'd be on with the key turned to "accessory." It looked like it was in neutral and the parking brake failed.
I agree, it should be shut off and in gear, it's the only way to make sure.
