(12,618 posts)Oh no, wrong skin color. Still entertaining to watch. Amazing the entitlement some people have. She thinks she can just go and take somebody else's property because she doesn't like how its being used. Had the roles been reversed in that situation the police would have been way more aggressive than they were. Still nice to see her get he ass handed to her.

(14,733 posts)Cop faces down double murderer, is repeatedly charged by him, while the guy shouts 'shoot me' and won't show that his hands are empty, even gets the cop to trip at one point. Cope refuses to shoot at him even once.
One guess as to the double murderer's skin tone.

(6,130 posts)The good news is that, now that Faux News has somebody with Sarah Palin's looks and Oliver North's medals, they can dump both of THOSE losers. Even the rubes that watch Fox are getting bored with them.

(3,732 posts)1. She's impassioned about protecting the dignity of the flag. I can't slam her for that. Most people - even many liberals I know - think desecration of the flag to make a political point (even a legitimate point) is stupid. Not illegal, just stupid.
2. She's committing an act of civil disobedience to make her point. We in the progressive camp generally endorse civil disobedience to protest injustice. What she's doing is relatively benign and non-violent. Ferguson protesters committed non-violent acts of civil disobedience by sitting in the street blocking traffic, refusing to disperse at the direction of police, and going limp when police were arresting them and physically taking them in to custody. I don't disagree with these acts.
3. The job of the police is to enforce the law (which they're doing by trying to get the flag from the woman and return it to the rightful owners). Also, the police's job is to preserve the peace (which they're doing by intervening at all and preventing a possible physical altercation between the woman and the flag protesters).
4. She has apparently wrapped the flag around a rifle or a model of a rifle. The police did not shoot her, nor tase her. They physically wrestled her to the ground and took it away. This was the correct way to handle it. If this was an African-American male in a similar context, I'm sure most of the officers would have felt "threatened" and taken more drastic, possibly deadly action. This is really the most interesting aspect of the video, to me...the clear illustration of difference in police response between confrontations with a black male presumed to be armed, and a white female with an even greater appearance of being armed.

(1,489 posts)She was unscathed after clearly resting arrest. The double-standard makes me ill.
I do not think anybody should be beaten, but she did much worse than Eric Garner.

(12,618 posts)I also think it's foolish to worship symbols, as it creates brainwashing and blind obedience. If everybody that claimed to pledge allegiance to the flag actually cared more about the injustices in this country as much as they did about a $2.00 piece of cloth made in China, we'd be in much better shape.
She is not committing civil disobedience, she is stealing somebody's property in a moment of irrational anger and refusing to acknowledge she is doing so. The first rule of civil disobedience is to acknowledge that you are breaking the law.
No argument with you about what the police are doing, except I agree with that there is a double standard. If this woman was black she would be dead or in the hospital right now.

(56,223 posts)"civil disobedience" isn't defined particularly rigidly, but certainly it's usually actions taking against, or in defiance of, governments to object to governmental impositions that people feel are unjust or unwarranted.
it's rather hard to justify stealing from another individual as an act of "civil disobedience".
no, this one is better filed at "taking the law into her own hands" or "vigilantism".

(25,536 posts)It's a two-fer for Fox. First, they can show this lady posed nude in Playboy with an American Flag draped over her shoulders and dragging the ground. Second, they can claim this lady is being persecuted for standing up for the symbol of our country.
Titillation and outrage in one story. How can this not sell?

(5,279 posts)Every flag bedecked napkin at every 4th of July picnic is a flagrant desecration of the Flag.
Every car flag tortured by constant sixty mile an hour wind is desecration.
Every flag patterned bathing suit gently cupping the genitals of some sweaty obese "patriot" is desecration.
By taking the oath of service she should have understood some things.
1) The first thing mentioned in the oath is the Constitution of the United States; service members swear to protect the ideas outlined in the Constitution before the country, government, or citizens.
2). The first modification of the Constitution was the Bill of Rights, the first of which prohibits, first, the establishment of a national religion; which includes the deification of the country and it's symbols, no part of anything connected to the United States can legally be considered anything by secular. A single copy out of the millions of varied copies based on a similar theme of a secular item lacks any special status.
3) Immediately following the prohibition of national religion in the first provision of the first set of amendments clearly states citizens have completely free speech. Which includes using items in political statements both pro-cultural and anti-cultural.
In the end our flag is just like every other piece of heraldry; to mark a place or person of importance in the confusion during the heat of battle. How much you revere it depends on what you got out of what it represents versus what it cost you.
To take the property of another is theft, not your free speech.
To make a free speech statement protecting a flag publicly desecrated as a political statement would have been to place yourself in harms way. Lay on it and let protesters walk on you instead.
