(34,582 posts)asking about Muslim, gay, atheist, etc, candidates for the presidency. We atheists always come in dead last. While we may not be attacked as often as other groups (probably because we don't talk about it, especially if we live in the bible belt) we tend to be one of the most hated.

(9,895 posts)If this is accurate, and I am not doubting that it is since the social mores of the age have been changing very rapidly ever since the world did not end once a few states allowed gays to have marriage equality; but if it is accurate across the entire voting population I am stunned that the GOP is not in full decline LOCALLY as well as NATIONALLY.
The gerrymandering that they pulled off by being in charge of re-districting following the 2000 and 2010 censuses is astounding.
In addition to term limits, strictly enforced and publicly funded elections and rescinding the draconian voter ID laws in favor of mandatory voting of ALL citizens of legal status to do so, fixing the damn voting districts to end this nonsense should be of paramount concern.

(20,219 posts)I'm glad the percentage of sane, decent people is higher, but it's still stunning to see the troglodyte level so high.
Evangelical christians are some of the sickest tickets going.

(32,015 posts)The poll must have used "evangelical" as a qualifier, importantly.

(135,425 posts)And surely not all evangelical Christians are of the "fundamentalist" variety...?
I'm a bit out of my wheelhouse on this matter, but I don't think all "evangelical Christians" are necessarily conservative and fundamentalist. My Google tells me so!

(135,425 posts)Some are liberal. Some are gay.
Who knew?
It looks like people are taking back that end of the Christian religious spectrum and it is no longer the exclusive province of fundie conservatives.
When you think about it, it makes sense. Wasn't the Jesus of the Bible an "evangelical" who spread the "Good news?" Wasn't he the guy who didn't have a word to say about being gay? Wasn't he the guy who was so liberal, one might call him a socialist? Sharing all that food, healing the sick, sheltering the homeless, suffering all those little children to come unto him, etc...?
If the idea of being "evangelical" is to be like the Jesus of the Bible spreading the word of a religion of love, then being a religious liberal who doesn't worry about gays or abortion fits the bill, I'd say.

(17,183 posts)... since all human behavior is subject to the tyranny of the bell curve. The question, however, is how large of a percentage of the respondents perceive evangelicals as super-conservatives, and how many see them as liberal. No stats on that, but I instinctively feel the number is few.

Of course, he was also a dry drunk, but that didn't seem to matter to the evangelicals.
