Before we go out and change the world this week, I thought I would share this video I captured on my back porch this past weekend.
Now go out and get 'em!

We stayed in a B&B called the Steamship I think it was. We were in town to see "How the West Was Won" at the Neon Cinerama Theater. We ate at diner that had been scheduled to be demolished, then was saved.
We have two males fighting like crazy even though there are two feeders. Happens every summer.
We don't have our camera up yet.

(12,882 posts)we see 80 - or more - come to our 10 feeders at the same time. They all come to get that last drink of the day. It's a fabulous show that never ceases to amaze us. We go thru hundreds of pounds of sugar each Spring - Summer season.

(495 posts)I think the most I've seen is about ten. I had two that nested in my yard last year.

(12,882 posts)We always have a crowd of hummers each summer (and a few that even stay thru the winter), but some years yield bigger "flocks" than others. This year is already a banner year and we've not had the youngsters emerge yet. THAT will test our ability to keep up with the feeders! Last year, we put out about 2 & 1/2 gallons of food every two days using 9 or 10 six-port feeders. There's times - while mixed with gardening and other pursuits - that it seems like a full-time job keeping up with the hungry horde! We could easily put out more feeders, but then it would be a full-time occupation. I've met at least one other person locally that kept about 25 feeders going. I don't know if one can put up TOO MANY feeders around here.
We basically see three varieties each year (that stay for a time) and one that just "passes thru" (the Rufous). The ones that stay are the Annas, the Black-Chinned and the Broadtails.
No one that comes by in the summer months can resist taking at least a few minutes to stop and watch the buzzing traffic of our back yard. It still amazes us after 26 years of living here!

(12,506 posts)I ran across this picture shortly before you posted, so I went and got it so that the hummingbird fans would get an eye full of birds.

(495 posts)It's best to find feeders that they can perch on while drinking. I attended a birding expo in the Poconos last year and they explained that they spend a lot of energy while feeding and its helps them out.

(9,298 posts)THANK YOU for that feeder tip - it makes perfect sense. Will have to get a few perch-ons.

"Because it is against state and/or federal law to collect and/or possess hummingbird nests in the U.S. and Canada, one should leave any hummingbird nest in place--even after the breeding season is over."
