Related: About this forumIt's always fun happy party time at Target. Target Stores Anti-Union Propaganda.
I love how Target sort of takes credit for labor laws that are only in existence because of labor unions so they can argue those laws already exist so don't join a union...
And let's not forget the scary union music...

(18,791 posts)The Flight Attendants (non-union) have been trying to organize for years...the company (via an outside contractor of some kind, that specializes in a propoganda campaign against unions) uses all sorts of "brainwashing" techniques...the stories are amazing...more amazing, people fall for it.

(1,333 posts)what is the benefit to an employee working with unions? Also, the unions have been a victim of their own success. A lot of the policies they advocated are now widely used by most employees and a lot of workers do not see the need for it.

(522 posts)This includes the right to a fair hearing; right to have a union representative with you in any corrective action meeting with management; the union can provide legal representation in wage and overtime disputes.
Unions continue to protect the rights and benefits currently in place.

(1,333 posts)But I meant to say employer as in management not employee as in worker. Its abundantly clear why workers would support unionization but I am yet to understand why an employer would be happy with union around. I guess productivity and happy workers are plus but worker productivity have been through the roofs even now even without unions.
So question is employer(management) not employee. I get those 2 confused a lot

(522 posts)First, sorry for the delay in responding i've been painting and mowing today.
Other there are no obvious reasons for employers to submit to unions. I think they have to look real hard to see the benefits of long term loyalty, fairness for both sides, and progressive training so that skilled/knowledgeable employees move up. This is not easy when most of them want to promote family and friends.

(904 posts)...because their existence and clout (though diminishing) are the only reasons why any worker protections still exist on the books. Lose the unions, and you lose the protections. Look no further than Wisconsin, Indiana, and the rest of the right-to-work-for-less states.
And Walmart, Target, and everyplace else in Corporate America.
Why do we need unions?
Because of people like Scott Walker, Mitch Daniels, Michelle Rhee (now Johnson), the Walton family, and on, and on, and on.
Knowing that Corporate America and the Banks aren't going to give a rats rear end about you (the workers), where are you going to turn? The GOVERNMENT? With it being BOUGHT and PAID FOR by the very same corporations and banks?
We need unions now. More than ever.

(1,666 posts)Unions are internal controls against corporations to ensure that corporate policies and government laws and regulations regarding worker protection and proper human resource policies are properly enforced. Unions also serve as negotating body who negotiates collectively on the part of labor when the worker is part of a standardized job class where the individual lacks the individual power to collectively negotiate a market-based wage with the employer.
I believe that unions sometimes get too powerful, but they serve as a powerful internal control against businesses who lack the ability to negotiate in good faith with the employers. Union-busting should be felony punishable term in the federal penitentiary.

(1,666 posts)I would use that internal control arguement is the most effective arguement against anti-union proganada because it properly asserts the proper role of unions and corporations in a capitalist economy.
