They so desperately need to maintain their Christian "family values" fairytales and façade that they will enthusiastically endorse any kind of coverup they can think of to keep the fairytales alive. I also think that this is why we have such a huge drug problem in this country - drugs numb us into complacency when the sheer cognitive dissonance of all this denial gets too high. And spiritual materialism is a big part of it too - TLC is making too much money off the Duggars and the "family values" propaganda that they can feed to the masses through them, which right wing Christians just can't get enough of. To spiritual materialists, a hugely profitable lie dressed in religious trappings is vastly preferable to confronting and dealing with the truth. For Josh Duggar, the Lord's Prayer went, ...and lead me not into temptation - I can find it myself!
