I always liked sci-fi and quirky shows. I was no Disney princess as a child. I was Lt. Uhura (although I'm not AA). I liked Uhura because she was a woman performing a job in a future where women and men were equals. My friend liked to be nurse Christine Chapel (played by the future Mrs. Roddenberry, Majel Barrett). So, even though the show wasn't on the air that long, it made an impression.

In later years, my favorite Star Trek was Voyager because it had a woman captain. Kate Mulgrew (now "Red" on OITNB) did a great job in portraying Captain Kathryn Janeway.
