(14,498 posts)Is "racism" the right word?

(2,268 posts)But I think what we're seeing is a dispute between a Caucasian/white male and a Latino/Hispanic male, which are considered distinct races. So, yes, racism would be the right word, provided you think race (as opposed to simply national origin) is a factor.
On edit: Good thing I prefaced my answer with "I'm no expert," because I was wrong. According to what I'm finding online, the terms "Latino" and "Hispanic" are not a reference to race, but to ethnic heritage. Apparently, anthropologists consider many Latinos--but not all--Caucasian/white. So your question is a good one. My first impression was, "Certainly racism is the right term." Now I'm not sure. Perhaps racism can be extended to cover prejudice based on ethnic heritage, but I'm not finding support for that in the dictionaries.
Interesting topic. If anyone can enlighten me here, please do. Thanks.

(2,268 posts)I was thinking racism had to apply since in a hypothetical scenario of, say, a Latino family being refused a table in a restaurant by a white restaurant owner, it's unlikely that the restaurant owner is thinking "I think they might be from Mexico" or "I hate salsa music." No; he's thinking they're inherently different and inherently inferior--seeing color, to use your term--even when an anthropologist might classify both parties as white. And that is most definitely racist.
Thanks for the insight.
