Related: About this forumWhat Mormons Really Believe (?)
I really don't know how much of this Mormons really believe. It certainly is bizarre, but that is true of many religions.

(21,925 posts)principles while in office. I really don't care whether Romney believes that Jesus was a space alien from the planet Kolob. But if his belief turns off the evangelical nuts and they don't vote for him then I'm all for introducing religion into the conversation. Too much is at stake to not take every advantage. If the way he wears his tie costs him the election with the nuts on the right then I'm all for discussing his choice in ties.

Because Mormons believe mental illness is a curse from god.
So yeah, this stuff is important.

(47,419 posts)but they weren't involved in politics on a national level. I have to believe that their greed overrides any spiritual beliefs. None of their mythical stories are as scary as their political ambitions. Mitt has already shown that he will do or say anything to win.

(47,419 posts)if the evangelicals are hypocritical enough to vote for Romney because he is the "Not-Obama" candidate even though they would find his religion more sacrilegious than Obama's policies. I think many of them wear their religion when it suits their preferences.

So, if something is "legal", but, according to your religion is not "moral" ... what happens when you're tested on your faith?
You know, like racism ... (the dark/black man is evil) ... or "the definition of marriage is one man and one or more women" ... you know, that Mitt's grandpa decided he loved more than his country ...

(12,272 posts)I know all religions have interesting histories, but The Book Of Mormon has been proven to be full of errors. Mormonism meets the definition of a cult and there are plenty of ex-Mormons who will attest to this.

(1 post)I, too, have had some first hand experience seeing them commit murder with no chance of being apprehended by their cronies. How do they achieve this without more public knowledge, you might ask? One of them said to me "If anyone had anything on paper to tie them to organized crime- they would be dead before it could reach the light of day." Their words.

(115,683 posts)Traditional Christians believe, more or less, that God sent his son, who was actually himself, to become human and die in order that he (God) would give eternal life to the people who believed Jesus was God. That's kind of weird, not to mention illogical. But I have to say, the Mormons out-weird traditional Christians any day. And if this is what the Mormons believe I can understand why traditional Christians don't think they really are Christians at all - I guess your average Catholic, Lutheran or Baptist might classify many Mormon beliefs as not just weird but downright heretical.
I think it's more like Scientology - a goofy mixture of theology and science fiction.

I worked a job in Reno for a short time in the early 90's (if anything representative of a dry run of a 'right to work' idealism was in play at the time - Reno was the place). Most jobs barely scratched above minumum), merchandising store shelves with coca-cola products for an outfit run by Mormons. They controlled a good 6% of coca cola holdings and had a good chunk of the China market at the time as well.

I sense that some Mormon business people feel so superior to the rest of us, that it doesn't matter if they make a profit off of our vices.

Perhaps the perceived threat of Mormonism is that though it is similar to mainstream Christianity it is also more different, so its enough like to be attractive, but also enough different to be dangerous.

No matter how he's labeled in the religiously, Romney is a predator and meglomaniac. He is unfit emotionally or philosophically (or morally, if one goes that route) to be POTUS.
Randian TeaBaggers don't need religion to want to impose a lot of sociopathic rubbish on us. I think Romney fits that model better.

(53,661 posts)I looked on the youtube page and there was some booing and hissing. Then I found a Mormon's comments, who said she'd been in it for 35 years and had a great life in LDS. She gave a 'If you haven't tried it, don't knock it' reply without debating the merits or 'facts.'
The problem is that for them, you can't prove anything with science, etc. And Democrats are big into what is called 'objective reality,' a ldiscussion of 'facts' and 'truth.' But others have, I suppose, a 'consensus reality,' where they believe in a 'truth' handed down by others or popular where they live.
I don't know how criticism of anything or anyone would ever reach them. We truly are living parallel universes, in a way that can never really get along.

I personally feel all religions are fairytales. My problem is when their beliefs force themselves into government. While Romney is trying to keep his religion out of the news (unless he is bragging about his good deeds) he is supporting all of the religious rights wacky beliefs.
To me this can be more dangerous than Bush's talking to god. Romney is a android doing what ever his programers want. If it happen to conflict with something he has said or done in the past he attempts to rewrite history.

(28,498 posts)...and overly complicated.
PatSeg
(47,419 posts)complicated and confusing, so the average person has to rely heavily on the knowledge of chosen elders, who probably have a direct link to god.
As for the contents of the video, I take some of it with a grain of salt, as I haven't been able verify a lot of it. The people who produced the video, are Christians who have gone after a lot of religions they find not "acceptable" to their beliefs. I found a website on them after I posted the video, but now I can't find it.
The best people to put this in perspective would be former Mormons who would actually know what was taught.
I remember having this same 'dream' during a particularly strong acid trip around 1974 or 1975.
I can't believe they actually put this to video. What happened? Did the powers that be actually scan my head? Good thing I wear metal based hats now. I can't imagine what would happen if THEY knew what I was thinking now!
