Related: About this forumOOPS! Willard Romney: We Don’t Need ‘More FIREMEN, More POLICEMEN, More TEACHERS’
" When Republicans attack public workers, they often take care to exempt cops and firefighters, because they are culturally sympathetic figures, and muddle the message that government workers are parasites who are destroying the economic conditions of ordinary Americans.
But today Mitt Romney got a good deal more specific, claiming we do not need to hire more cops or firefighters specifically, which would, he said, cut against the interests of the American people. He also specificallly named teachers.
Romney made the comments in response to Obamas presser today, at which the president claimed the private sector is doing fine. Per CNN:
Romney said of Obama, he wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. Its time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.
Its hard to argue that the message from Wisconsin was that Americans dont think we should hire more firefighters and cops. They were exempted from Scott Walkers crackdown on public employee bargaining rights, which enabled him to divide and conquer labor.
But beyond that, this could resonate in the presidential race: It will allow the White House to reframe the debate over public sector workers and job creation on more favorable terms.
- This time, however, Romney deserves points for honesty: He has forthrightly declared that the class of government workers holding back other Americans does include cops, firefighters and teachers. And in so doing, he has singlehandedly reframed the debate from one over despised government bureaucrats to one over whether we should hire more cops, firefighters and teachers to get the economy going. This is a debate the White House will be happy to have.

Doesn't the Mormon religion preach that infiltrating and bringing down the school system is thier one of many attempt for them to take over America?

Just, "Get the job done," and if there is "collateral damage," so what - it had to get done.
This picture comparison is quite a find and is compelling. People's faces become set over time by their experiences, actions, and reactions. Romney's past actions have been cold and detached; if he can detach himself to the suffering of his dog, I have no doubt that he could detach himself from the suffering of people whom he puts out of work, or the people from whom he will remove Medicare, Medicaid, and pensions.
Chilling.

(1,328 posts)when he needs one of these people to perform a duty for him, they aren't available.
Same with the repubs thinking we don't need bridges, roads, buildings or schools fixed; they are the ones that are injured when one of these collapse. Maybe they would finally wake up but suppose that is asking too much.

But, they also know how to keep their own jobs working for the plutocrats, by keeping their own mouths shut.

(57,936 posts)I remember back in the Reagan/Bush days when the Republicans were all over law and order and punishing crime. How do you do that without policemen and firemen?
And what was his record in Massachusetts on employing public servants -- teachers prison guards, firemen, police officers, housing and building code inspectors?
A lot of neighborhood associations in nice areas are dominated by Republicans who want local code restrictions enforced at all costs.
The Republican mantra of small government, if applied at the local level, would make the enforcement of building codes pretty tough.
Romney's stance is incredibly naive. It is a slogan that could come back to bite him as the campaign progresses.
If leaders in the construction industry had to wait even longer to get someone to come out and approve their work, can you imagine how they would scream?
Less government indeed. Mitt Romney needs to rethink this slogan.

(1,830 posts)They want to shrink the government down to a size they can drown in a bathtub. (per Grover Norquist)
That one sentence should be echoed from coast to coast. They are trying to dismantle this government and sell off what was formerly the United States of America. The people will work for next to nothing out of survival desperation. The chunkier crumbs will go to the police to keep the peons in line. Mitt's the guy you send in when you want to take it down. No emotional ties to the little people. Just the cold-hearted killing of a way of life.
Don't take it personal.

(781 posts)Well, what Little Mittle says is true, we don't need those non-Amercian people like teachers, police officers or fire fighters. What have they ever done for us?
What we need is chefs, chauffeurs, maids and butlers along with, you know, those little illegals who do all the dirty jobs and maybe a caddy or two. And prison guards.
And what about the military? Do they work for the government? Oh, no matter, we can always hire Blackwater to save money and I'm sure Mitts knows a few people who have their own private armies.

(2,289 posts)He's got enough money to hire his own private ones when needed (probably provided by whatever name Blackwater is going by now). It is the same for the cops (Those stand your ground laws are probably helping in that it gives his 'police' an excuse for shooting people). As for teachers, I'm sure he figures that if you can't afford to send your kids to a private school or for special in house tutors, that your kids don't need educating. After all, they will never amount to anything more than being his serfs in life.

(13,570 posts)Nor was it any kind of a national mandate. It was one STATE matter and ONE set of particular dynamics. A majority there rejected a recall of a sitting governor. It did not invoke a hatred of copes and firemen nor an extreme love of Walker.
The Dems need to HAMMER this asshole with this. PLASTER IT ALL OVER THEIR ADS. If there is a cop or firefighter left in this country would consider voting for this asshole, then they deserve him.

(12,977 posts)... just added extra funding for cops and firefighters to the Homeland Security bill.
They did it because their states and local districts love getting that money.
They also did it because of their free-market ideology, which states that the only legitimate function of government is to protect private property. But even they know you can't do that without police and without firefighters.
Half the problem with Mitt is not that he's a conservative but that he's a really, really bad conservative. As in, he hasn't yet gotten the basic message about conserving things.
Or maybe it's that he really is a robot pretending to be human.

(32,723 posts)He just blew a major Republican talking point for us! Come on! There was NO WAY the media was going to connect "government workers" with police, firefighters and teachers no matter how many times one of us said it.
The media and the Republicans talked about "government workers" as if they were contemptible useless paper pushers serving no real function apart from collecting a paycheck.
Now, thanks to Mitt and his big mouth WE own the debate with the American People over whether we need more teachers, police and firefighters. Three jobs that have traditionally earned respect in our communities.
