(27,315 posts)I found one element missing, though. We who grew up in the late 60s grew up during the Cold War. I'm sure that sounds very abstract now, but at the time it meant that we were always under the threat of nuclear war. Nuclear war was an ever-present possibility. During the Cuban missile crisis, my elementary school had several drills for a possible nuclear attack. We filed out into the hallway and lined up in the "duck and cover" position with our heads facing the wall (also termed "kissing your ass goodbye"
. One morning we all boarded school buses and practiced an evacuation. At the dinner table my parents discussed whether to stock a fallout shelter in the cellar. I think the very real possibility of nuclear war had a profound influence on all of us, although it is often omitted in documentaries o the 60s.

I bookmarked this so I can send it to all of my family - they are Bernie supporters today.
