(40,416 posts)BTW, the Hillary supporter meltdown this week about Bernie's Vatican visit was absolutely stunning. I am gob smacked by their inanity. And I thought that the Birdie Sanders reaction was ridiculous.
How anybody thinks that these types of arguments are winning ones is astounding.
My best to you.

(6,440 posts)Bernie being invited to speak on "the moral economy" rather highlighted the aura of sleaze that clings to their candidate like dirt.

(11,012 posts)Bernie's podium and the invite to the Vatican symposium as signs or omens that (OH MY GOD!) maybe, just maybe, God wants Bernie to win.
It must be very disconcerting...

(57,936 posts)Those that lost their homes or businesses or jobs are backing Bernie.
Those who did not are OK with Bernie or Hillary.
But those who have had a tough time economically are really strong Bernie backers and most of them will not vote for Hillary no matter what.

(4,695 posts)for years and years. It is scary to think about what will happen when prices rise above status income. Many are seeing the Light with a little Birdie on his shoulder; our dear Bernie.

(799 posts)I don't think all of the Bernie supporters are thinking only of themselves and their economic conditions. I look at it as a greater good for everyone and the world.

(15,642 posts)The notion that Bernie supporters are largely those who are still struggling during/after the recovery is lame -- I have to wonder whether this is just another BS meme being used to put the Bernie movement down. Some people happen to be able to objectively view and be analytical about the politico-economic landscape despite their own relative well-being. Others, not so much -- they allow self-interest to get in the way, however, short-sighted that may be. That's not to say that all Hillary or all Bernie supporters base their support on the economic issue; there are plenty of other factors which, in itself, belies the notion that the difference is defined by having done well vs still struggling after the great recession.
Bernie support is much broader than that simple divide.

(141 posts)is alot of these Hillary supporters used to be moderate republicans. Since the dem party abandoned the working class for corporations and banks the mod reps who where with the republican party because of business philosophy left when the republican party got too conservative. They then went over to the dem party because the democratic party became the corporate/banking party or party of business.

(3,963 posts)Those who are doing relatively fine think that what happened to those "other" people could never happen to them. They may even take some hidden confidence boost by seeing that others are doing worse than they are. That is why these people like the status quo. What they don't see is that they are on the same sinking ship and that if the damage is not repaired they will go down too pretty soon.

(1,268 posts)And these kids are nervous about the environment. One didn't know who they would vote for I brought the issue of climate change. After talking to him for a couple of minutes of so, he seemed somewhat understandable that Bernie wants to address this ASAP. Not sure if he was truly committed to voting for Bernie. But I think he understood what I was saying. Encouraged though since majority of the kids I registered are backing Bernie 100%
democrank
(11,092 posts)between Bernie supporters and many Hillary supporters. Bernie went there to speak on poverty and economic justice, what should be major issues for any Democrat. Yet, every imaginable put-down was written about Bernie and his trip, even though Bernie`s goal was to help raise the issue of poverty on an international stage.....an issue he has spoken of for decades. Any Democrat should have supported that effort.

(7,830 posts)Conservatives can't fathom thinking about anyone but themselves, so they see through that filter.

(17,184 posts)Support LGBT rights? You must be gay. Support women's rights? You must be female. Support minority rights? You must not be a white male. If you don't have skin in the game, the theory goes, you must have an ulterior motive.
The flip side applies, too. Stipulate that the woman's comment is true, it follows that if one is still in recovery from the crash, yet supports Mrs Clinton, he is a traitor to his class or "voting against his best interests." There is, in this view, no interest more significant than the economic.

(7,830 posts)Why do you think there is a battle for the soul of the party?
The Clintons ushered in conservatism & we need to get back to FDR Democracy. Third Way wants republican policies. Like these~

The term Democrat In Name Only, DINO, exists for a reason.

(37,158 posts)OK, below is the full interview video. The part clipped in the OP is at about 43:23.
The part where she introduces herself, her views, and why she's a Bernie supporter is at the 11:00 mark.
Just explain to me how she's a conservative. That's all. I can understand that you don't agree with her observation in the OP, but I'm not too clear on how that's conservative and not just a difference of opinion.
RiverLover
(7,830 posts)And yes, what she said in the OP snip video is conservative BS. Its not just people who are hurting & down on their luck backing Bernie.
Not by a long shot. That's a republican meme.
But thanks for posting the full interview. Will watch it now.

(7,830 posts)Its the people who are INFORMED who support Bernie.
The poor, truly poor, who were hurt by 2008 especially, are the disaffected voters who would never even think to vote in a primary & are too busy trying to survive to pay attention to the election. They've already realized their govt doesn't represent their interests, they've given up thinking their vote matters. At least that is what I've seen in talking to people.

(7,830 posts)Love reading about FDR. It is fun, yes!! What an astoundingly great man. And his wife was astounding as well.
I always quote FDR, like I do in my signature line. But my all time favorite quote comes from Eleanor:
"The future belongs to those who BELIEVE in the beauty of their dreams".
Wish we could have cloned them.
