The trailers for the newest one coming out suuuuuuuuck. Why is the franchise about riding motorcycles through explosions and beating people up while the Beastie Boys yell now?

Sigh.

You'll see that all the Roddenberry has been removed from the ingredient list.
Similarly, the Star Wars franchise no longer contains any Joseph Campbell.

Leaving these out has removed most of the real flavor that made them popular in the first place.

It wasn't inspired, but it did a good job of getting the Star Wars "feel." I'm looking forward to the next one

And you know, I didn't mind the first two "new" Star Trek movies... I mean, they're not Star Trek, but fuck it, still better than Star Trek: Generations. But Star Trek Beyond looks like it'll be exactly what it is - a space-themed entry into Justin Lin's Street Racing movie franchises.

Poor writing seems to be a hallmark of Abrams work, but he does seem to be able to put butts in seats.
"Uninspired fun" was how a friend described Force Awakens, and I suppose I can't argue with that.

Beyond the bad writing, the thing I found actively annoying in the latest Trek flicks was the score.
Perfect perhaps for a Batman movie, but inappropriate for Trek.

I am interested to see what they will come up with, but to be honest, the fans have been doing some damned impressive work:

I love Star Trek Continues. The sets and art direction honor the original series. Even the door opening sounds are right. Plus, Doohan's son.

More Star Trek fan stuff out there, most importantly, Axanar, now on hold because stupid CBS is suing the production company. But there's still the Prelude to Axanar.

Looks promising. And yes, that's really Richard Hatch (from the original Battleship Gallactica) as the Klingon war lord.
The cast looks very good.
