If the Democratic PTB didn't get a fire under their asses after the 2000 election and fight for some changes, they never will. At the time I read from several sources that Republicans had plans in place ahead of time in case the popular vote/Electoral College thing happened in Gore's favor. Had that been the case, I'm sure we'd never have heard the end of it until changes were made in favor of a strictly popular vote, as is the case for election of every other public office.
