Hat tip, Joe.My.God: Pam Bondi Hits Back At Anderson Cooper: That Inappropriate Interview Spurs Anger And Hate

(27,792 posts)I think there are times and places to push an interview subject, and times when you shouldn't, and I think that this was one of the times to got for it. The GOP has no real agenda in subjecting gay rights (or the rights of any group) other than creating wedge issues to drive turnout up and win elections. We saw no better example of this than in Ohio in 2004, when they put gay marriage on the ballot for no real reason other than defeating John Kerry.
So if they are going to fan the flames of hatred on things like this to win elections, they need to reap what they sow. Most people in the US now support gay marriage. We could quietly pass laws that reflect the will of the people, and since these laws affect no one negatively and only have a positive effect to the people they help, no one would even notice.
But the GOP has chosen to make people notice. If election turnout in this country wasn't so abysmal, this stuff would never get off the ground. Knowing that most people don't even bother to vote, the GOP routinely seeks out issues that prey on voters' fears and gets them on the ballot. They also work hard to get them on primary ballots, when turnout is even lower. This will draw in a crowd to vote on just that one issue, and it skews our laws.
Pam Bondi is obviously a part of this process. I think it was abundantly fair to call her out on it. If she and her ilk didn't ramp up the rhetoric on issues like gay marriage, they wouldn't help create these monsters that go out and act on this hatred.
