I don't know why more people are not calling the repukes what they really are: treasonous bastards.

record of supporting the NRA and against what 90% of what Americans
really want. (aka some good gun laws)

(48,966 posts)Women don't have balls, but that doesn't make them any less courageous as a group or individually than men.
I think over-use and reflexive thoughtless use of "balls" is sexist, even if most politicians (including Ryan, I think) are men.
A politician's choice of sex hormone (endogenous or exogenous) is their own business.
I'm not wishing to start an argument; just hoping that some people will think about this who might not have in the past.

(135,425 posts)They've got ovaries (whcih, I never really realized, were also GONADS--having never used the word that way):
go·nad
ˈɡōnad/
nounPHYSIOLOGYZOOLOGY
an organ that produces gametes; a testis or ovary.
vulgar slang
a man's testicles or genitals.
The reason for the sexual equipment "shorthand" has to do with what happens to a farm or domestic animal that has had their balls--or gonads, if you prefer--removed. They tend to get fatter, more complacent, certainly less aggressive, and often more docile and obedient.
The idea here is to suggest that the National Rifle Association has "gelded" this Speaker, so he will be more complacent and obedient to their wishes.
It's not to do with the "politician's choice of sex hormone."
It's an appropriate characterization. There are times when the "balls" commentaries are not appropriate--but this isn't one of them, I do not believe.

(48,966 posts)People should feel just as silly saying "that politician doesn't have the balls" as they would "that politician doesn't have the ovaries".
Or, perhaps even more usefully, instead of writing something like "It takes balls to stand up to the NRA", we can write "It takes gonads to stand up to the NRA" so that we can automatically include politicians like Elizabeth Warren as well as John Lewis.

(135,425 posts)Really! Maybe we travel in different circles! And usually in an admiring way--"She's got the ovaries to take that on...." --that kind of thing. I've not often heard "She lacks the ovaries to do the job..." Yet, anyway!
It's usually said deliberately, with a bit of emphasis, to distinguish from "balls" or "nuts" or "stones" or what have you...!
But yeah--educating people that 'gonads aren't just for the lads' might be a good thing! Nicely inclusive!

(48,966 posts)(When the sex of the politician is obvious by being named, then the specific is applicable. But for the general class, the general name for the organs is applicable.)
On the other hand, sometimes people end up losing or rejecting their gonads and remaining every bit as courageous as they ever were.
So ultimately the focus on hyper-sexuality as a denominator or necessity for courage is misplaced.
Intelligent people tend to be more courageous than stupid people. Courage dwells in the brain.
That is why conservatives and Republicans sell so much fear in politics and Obama did so well selling optimism and positivity.

(581 posts)the majority of the American population. I live in a NRA and GOP controlled state and speaking with several gun owners and NRA members, they support the Senate bills, they in fact indicated they wanted strong bills, no loopholes for the NRA. They said the officers of the NRA are on the wrong side of the many gun owners now and some will not renew memberships.
I believe the Republicans are headed for a huge defeat in November from the people. Thus far the GOP ignores what the voters are saying. Head in the sand, or elsewhere?
