What would our world be like if the AIDS crisis hadn’t decimated an entire generation of gay men?

“Fathers” is a “sci-fic documentary” from activist and filmmaker Leo Herrera that imagines an alternate universe where AIDS never happened and queer heroes, artists and activists lived on. Herrera describes it as HBO’s “Looking” meets “Black Mirror” meets Beyonce’s “Lemonade.”

“The idea for ‘Fathers’ came from a deep need to have an older generation to guide me and others through some issues that only gay men can understand,” Herrera told The Huffington Post. “Specifically, the idea came from our community’s reaction to the release of PrEP ― there was so much confusion and anger, that I thought, ‘I really wish we had some older guides to get us through this.’ Then the sadness of how fatherless our community has been hit me. The men that are featured so far are artists and activists that have affected me personally, that I was already intimate with.”

‘Fathers’ is currently engaged in an Indiegogo campaign in order to fund production and is slated to be released in 2017. For now, check out the trailer above.
