(40,416 posts)We have a constitution! That document is the law of the land with respect to electing a president.
First, one does not get to make shit up about a presidential election. Such things are very specifically layed down in said constitution. There is absolutely nothing in that document which allows for a redo.
Those who propose such a thing are ignorant of both our rule of law and of our over two centuries of a democratic republic.
If you want to oppose Drumpf, and I do, we have to work within our constitutional framework.
That leaves us with a rather narrow band of options, given the current situation.
But that's what we have.
Let's get to work, understanding that Drumpf will likely be inaugurated on Jan 20th as POTUS.

(8,392 posts). . . This will not happen, much as you or I or anyone else might want it to. This is wishful thinking.

(7,616 posts)Especially so since the US can see how Trump intends to rule.
Have no idea how this would work though...

(17,493 posts)Since both houses of Congress are controlled by Republicans who would have the power to declare that the current results are invalid and would this end up in the Supreme Court? How long would this process take?

(16,254 posts)The situation certainly can't be left without investigating and correcting the injustice done to Hillary. We sure don't want to have to pull out Trump and leave Pence and Ryan in place.
Wouldn't it burn the Repubs if Obama remained in office? They were so afraid he'd figure out a way to stay a 3rd term. Ah, yes!

(17,493 posts)I was born in 1946.
Having a redo of the Presidential election would possibly prove a fitting ending to this farce.

(16,254 posts)Not only the campaign and election, but Trump's refusal to perform most of his duties in the WH/Oval Office and to require two SServices and the NYPD to keep them safe because of her refusal to move from Trump Towers and Barron's school.
Each election will get further and further away from tradition and common sense arrangements.

(17,493 posts)However this election basically disgusted me.
I was glad to see it finally end even though I was not impressed by the final results. Now I find out that it might not yet be over.
I'm considering giving up on watching the news and starting to find a new hobby such as watching mindless, stupid, unrealistic movies.
and being born in '49, I'm just a couple of years behind.
Today I realized that I have not felt relaxed
since Trump "won" the election and I also realized that I have not felt so 'afraid' of a political/national situation since the Cuban Missile Crisis when I was eleven years old.

(17,493 posts)He was a strong Democrat with a lot of dislike if not hatred towards Republicans and their policies.
My mother was not all that interested in politics. However she was also a Democrat.
I was certain that we would have a nuclear war in the next decade after the Cuban Missile Crisis ended. Fortunately I was wrong but sooner or later I still feel nukes will bee used once again in warfare. Far too many nations now have the technology.

(29,034 posts)like my parents...My father was also a strong Democrat with a pronounced dislike of the Republican party, especially Ronald Reagan.
He organized a union during the 1940's, in fact, this is how he met my mother, who, like your mother, was also a Democrat, if somewhat less involved than my Dad. I learned so much from them.

(14,286 posts)But nothing prevents Obama from resigning before the end of his second term, to make Joe Biden president. Biden might pledge to serve until a new election is decided. That would prevent Obama's action from being seen as self-serving.
But this is all unprecedented. There is no do-over mechanism for elections under the constitution. This would have to go through congress, so it would have to be a bipartisan effort about the most partisan of activities.
spin
(17,493 posts)before it does. I also suspect that during the run up to the election there will be a LOT of unrest in this nation. We might even see an uprising no matter who wins the redo. If Hillary won it wouldn't surprise me to see Texas and some other red states decide to leave the union.
We definitely live in "interesting times."

(17,493 posts)They have probably tried to interfere in all of our modern elections. I wouldn't be surprised if we had interfered with their elections. In fact I might be more surprised if we didn't.
It's like the Russians hacking our government computer systems. Your can bet that we hack theirs.
The National Security Agency (NSA) is an intelligence organization of the United States government, responsible for global monitoring, collection, and processing of information and data for foreign intelligence and counterintelligence purposes, a discipline known as signals intelligence (SIGINT). NSA is concurrently charged with protection of U.S. government communications and information systems against penetration and network warfare.[8][9] Although many of NSA's programs rely on "passive" electronic collection, the agency is authorized to accomplish its mission through active clandestine means,[10] among which are physically bugging electronic systems[11] and allegedly engaging in sabotage through subversive software.[12][13] Moreover, NSA maintains physical presence in a large number of countries across the globe, where its Special Collection Service (SCS) inserts eavesdropping devices in difficult-to-reach places. SCS collection tactics allegedly encompass "close surveillance, burglary, wiretapping, breaking and entering".[14][15]

(11,641 posts)It's a very serious situation with extremely serious claims.
The evidence needs to be solid if there is going to be any follow up on the claims. That may well happen but we aren't there yet.

(13,056 posts)Theoretically the Electoral College could reject Trump but I seriously doubt that would happen. The next alternative would be for Congress to impeach and remove Trump once he is in office. That would require support from the Republicans and probably proof that Trump was personally involved in the conspiracy. And after Trump the next few individuals in line for the presidency will all be Republicans.
Or in other words, we are between a rock and a hard place.

(7,402 posts)Obviously for President but with all of the straight party voting these days this Russian hacking didn't just take down Hillary Clinton, it took down Senators and House members as well.
Then look at what happened in Louisiana today. The Trump cult could pull off an even bigger win.
