As always, an excellent analysis by Ta-Nehisi.
I think there is one other factor that rarely if ever was mentioned about Barack Obama's background, outside of the pervasive CT nonsense about his having attended a Wahhabist madrassa while living in Indonesia, and that was the fact that he DID have a step-father who was Indonesian (Asian), and a half-sister who was biracial like himself (same mother). So our current President was a product of, and exposed to the cultures of the 3 (European-defined) "races". The cultural uniqueness of all of these sociological groups provided him with a large pallet of choices to select from as a means for discourse that could "speak to" or "appeal to" various groups, as well as to find potential solutions to problems.
As a literal representation of the amalgam of America, Barack Obama and his Presidency will be studied for generations.

Yes, mother an anthropologist, experience with other cultures -- no wonder he's so flexible!
