8. none of the fish in the tank eats large prey.

Whale sharks are filter feeders.

They also probably keep the fish well enough fed that they don't see a need to eat their tankmates.

9. I was wondering about those big guys.

I didn't think they'd put a bunch of fish together that would eat each other, but the big ones do look like they might. It would be like putting piranhas in your koi pond.

11. There is a similar, not quite as large, tank in New Orleans

...at the Aquarium of the Americas. It's a Gulf of Mexico exhibit, with an actual oil rig and many sharks. During an open house behind the scenes event a catwalk collapsed with ten visitors on it, dumping them into the tank. While they were being rescued the sharks cowered at the far end of the tank. I guess we all want normal.

13. I was there in the mid-1990's for a joint herpetology-ichthyology meeting.

Being in an aquarium with several hundred drunken ichthyologists is a real treat.

What I remember most about that big tank was the big alligator gar. The sharks left it alone, and they all had what looked like gar-shaped bite scars on their tails.

With the people silhouetted in front of it you can get an idea of the sizes of the fish and the aquarium. Very enjoyable.

10. The stingrays are so beautiful and graceful to watch.

I also like to watch the guys cleaning the bottom of the tank.

The animal welfare activist in me though... wants them in a natural habitat; sand, seaweed, coral and other things like that.
