(9,081 posts)Carrie Fisher says she felt insecure because of the 10lbs she had trouble losing. And Foster could be brought in at any moment.

(128,372 posts)and although she was certainly excellent as a child star, she would have been 13/14 when the auditions took place (Terri Nunn was also in the running and is a year older). Am guessing the "threat" might have been because of Foster's nomination for an Oscar (and wins of other awards for "Taxi Driver" . In any case, the industry was ridiculous to compare a 19-year old with a 13-year old (although it seems Judy Garland went through similar issues with "The Wizard of Oz" casting).
This has some of the "older" actresses around Carrie's age at the time (give or take) who competed - http://io9.gizmodo.com/star-wars-audition-tapes-feature-a-very-different-origi-1702308808
I do remember the hullaboo around what she had to do for "Return of the Jedi" to get into that outfit. It's just damn sad.

(9,081 posts)I've been reading and watching interviews and Carrie Fisher most definitely felt threatened by the possibility that Foster could be brought in to replace her. This was in her mind because though Foster was too young for the romantic aspect of the story, that wasn't yet known when they both auditioned. Carrie was insecure. Playing Princes Leia helped to make her more confident in herself.

(18,605 posts)Of course the character was more driven and controlling in the film which would be made a difference. She had a softer concept here.
