This Wall Is "Supposedly" Being Built To Keep The Mexicans Out of the United States.

A Few Questions For My Fellow DU Members:

1. Is this wall going to be guarded with armed guards to prevent Mexicans from jumping over the wall like the Berlin Wall that was constructed in 1961?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Wall

2. Is this wall being built to keep U.S. citizens from leaving the United States like the Berlin Wall? (Ex. The Movie World War Z(2013))
Note: Why else do away with the ACA/ObamaCare?

3. Is Native American land going to be seized to build this wall?
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jan/26/donald-trump-border-wall-tohono-oodham-arizona-tribe

I hope my questions here are open-minded enough when we all are being fed "Alternative Facts",etc. from the 45 Administration because they intend to blindside us all.

Main Street USA is so full of pot holes that you risk a busted axle driving it at more than 5 MPH.

Public schools are adding "portable classrooms" throughout the country, while storefront charter schools siphon off tax dollars to corporations.

The national power grid remains vulnerable to every act of nature, let alone terrorism.

Mass transit in urban areas is sacrificed on the altar of fossil-fuel based planning, which clearly cannot cope with the demands.

And last -- but certainly not least -- our health-care system is doomed to spiral down to third-world-country levels in terms of quality and cost of care.

But, yes, by all means, let's build a wall along our southern border.

Beam me up, Scotty!

I feel this meme is sacrificing some very core progressive values solely to attack DT. While imposing a tariff to pay for a wall that literally has no return on investment (or even a negative one!) is such an awful idea I don't know where to begin, we seem to now be attacking common sense tax policy that would help the American worker. The goal of an economy shouldn't be this race to the bottom where we have the cheapest prices but every manufacturing job is outsourced. I for one would love to pay a higher price for any good that I know my sisters and brothers made with pride here in our own country.

Not the return of manufacturing jobs. Mexico does have a economy. We trade with that economy. Both exports and imports. The tariff is just another piece of Trump crap he tosses out there--nobody knows if it's a red herring or if he is serious.

I do agree in spirit

But, unfortunately "made in America" no longer means quality OR good jobs and sometimes means "assembled in America" --once manufacturering is deregulated, it will mean even less.

Especially when it's a blanket tax like this. There are a lot of jobs tied to Mexico, goods (like certain produce) that only comes from Mexico at times, and harming the Mexican economy would actually create a new immigration problem. With hundreds of billions of dollars of trade going both ways, it's far more complicated than raising a tax and telling factories to come back.

I in no way think this "proposal" would be even close to a common sense tax policy. I'm fairly certain it was an attempt by our lovely president to appease his voters and keep the news cycle focused on anything other than his cabinet picks and his ties to Russia. The point I was trying to make is we need to be careful when arguing about tariffs. Saying that a 20% import tariff would cause Americans to pay 20% more is arguing that low prices are the determinant factor which actually puts us on the side of the Neocons.

And those who don't like America exercising moral leadership in the world? They're getting what they wanted, too. We have a special relationship with Mexico, but tRump is a psychopathic narcissist. He is a danger to humanity.

“…Here is something that Mr. Trump apparently does not know: U.S.-Mexico trade is unique in the world; there is a "production sharing" program between Mexico and the United States in which, according to the Wilson Center's Mexico Institute, "A full 40 [percent] of the content of U.S. imports from Mexico is actually produced in the United States. ... This means that forty cents of every dollar spent on imports from Mexico comes back to the United States, a quantity ten times greater that the four cents returning for each dollar paid on Chinese imports."

This production sharing with Mexico is vital for the United States. For example, between 2009 and 2014, according to the Congressional Research Service, the U.S. imported a total of $341 billion in cars and car parts from Mexico, of which $136 billion was the 40 percent that Mexico bought from us to install in cars assembled in Mexico, then exported to the U.S. In $341 billion dollars worth of goods imported from China, 4 percent would be $13 billion — compared to 10 times more from Mexico.

"Production sharing" means that the U.S. has an actual positive balance of trade with Mexico, rather than huge deficits as with China, Germany, United Kingdom, Japan etc. For example, in 2014, Mexico sold $290 billion to the U.S. Forty percent of $290 Billion is $116 billion which, when added to the $240 billion in goods and services we sold Mexico, totals at $356 billion, or a positive trade balance of $182 billion. Mr. Trump, do the math.

The Wilson Center also posits that "There are 6 million U.S. jobs that depend on trade with Mexico. Two border states that trade extensively with Mexico, California (692,000 jobs) and Texas (463,000 jobs) have the most…Detroit (alone) exports $10.9 BILLION in cars and car parts to Mexico (part of the total of $20 BILLION worth of cars and auto parts exported to Mexico)….”

propaganda organs are NOT reporting this; and further, what do you bet that the rank and file Trump supporters, who do not go on the internet for their news, watch ONLY Fox and listen ONLY to hate-talk radio won't EVER get this message?

Bill Maher brought this out last night, and it is true. Otherwise how could SO many be SO stupid as to have voted Trump into office?
