This is very crucial and important reporting. Must watch! If the republiCONs pass nation wide voter ID laws and other voter suppression laws, we may never see democrats in power again. VOTING is the ONLY way we change our politicians. If they rig this on a national level, our democracy is over.
http://democracynow.org - Voting rights activists are expressing alarm after President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday creating a "Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity." Particularly worrying to voting right activists is the selection of Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach as the vice chair of the commission. Kobach has pushed for the strictest voter identification laws in the country and advocated for a "proof-of-citizenship" requirement at the state and federal levels. For more, we speak with Ari Berman, senior contributing writer for The Nation, where he covers voting rights. His recent piece is headlined "Trumps Commission on 'Election Integrity' Will Lead to Massive Voter Suppression."

(291 posts)This is my first post to DU. This scares me more than all the other slow, growing nightmares caused by this administration. This administration is compromised, self-serving and determined to suppress our country's talents and intellect, as we try to move into the future. And now they are trying to prevent us from fixing it in 2018.
What can we do to stop this? Calls to our city and local government officials...I know, but is it enough? What grass roots efforts can be done to register new voters? And to make sure current voters have what they/we need? Make sure people can get to the polls to vote, if they change the voting hours and days?
I'm scared and all ears...! This is going to be a fight and I'm willing to do my part.

By the long game I mean we are going to have to focus on winning and keeping the smaller lower levels in government at the county level first, from there you go to the state level and then on to the federal but it will take decades thus why its called the long game.

(6,344 posts)This is the ROOT of our democracy and the republiCONs know it. They know so well, they deliberately and openly pass laws to suppress the vote and make it harder for people to vote. The worst in the country is what they do in Texas. Unbelievable! The get-out-the vote volunteers no longer go to Texas because they literally can be arrested and charged with a felony. Yes, a felony for just helping people register to vote.
Ari Berman carries a torch for voting rights and voting issues. His book, "Give Us the Ballot" is important and well put together.

Another voting champion I know about is www.bradblog.com. Brad also has a daily 1-hour progressive radio show program and he often talks about the voting issues. He was sought out by the Clinton campaign regarding the voting issues and what to do.
Welcome to DU!

(37,648 posts)Distressing, to say the least. What's more, most of the public is wrapped up in their daily lives, apolitical, and doesn't have a clue about what's going on. They wouldn't believe it, if you told them, because it's unbelievable until you walk through all the facts over the last several months.

(58,785 posts)Constitution for. Right out of the gate, practically anything this bogus commission tries to put over will be taken straight to the courts, including by state governments.
Note that there is almost no voter fraud. Almost all the election tampering in this nation is done by right-wingers to elect Republicans, and most of that is egregious, wide-spread voter suppression. The continuation of the Wealthy White Man's Party has depended on it for some time.
And this could turn out to be a terrible trumpian disaster for the Republican Party and the extremists pulling its strings by focusing the nation on the extremely real need to assure election integrity.

(41,818 posts)It seems the Republicans want this to happen again. No women, No Minorities, and no middle class or poor people. Basically few if any Democrats.
