Mostly because he's stupid, but not THAT stupid. He reads over seas stories about how he is thought of around the world. I don't think he cares much about the rubes protesting in the streets, but he wants to be respected and admired by other leaders as a peer. And there is a risk of being publicly humiliated if one of them is critical of him or refuses to see him, or something. Aided and abetted by the foreign press who have not been kind to him at all and are bound to ask uncomfortable questions If he stays home, he can just pretend everybody loves him.

the White House? He spends every weekend at one of his properties (gotta' steal the taxpayers' money!) playing golf, or going to rally's where his supporters grovel at his feet, and hail him as the most important person in the UNIVERSE!
