Sam Houston opposed leaving the union, and lost his job over it. He never supported the Confederacy, and died early in the war still opposing it.

THEIR reasons: They are dumb as rocks, like to walk around with guns and pose, and don't take to education too well. Houston shouldn't be revered, but he WAS extremely complex and interesting, and lived in a nexus of time that allowed for his full expression.
