1. This is what I was thinking two weeks ago.

2. Trump doesn't care about optics,

But firing mueller would really look bad. I don't go to any repuke message boards (I had to leave my university message board because the RW ball sniffer trolls were too much), but I do read comments on twitter. Dumps base is fully on board with him firing Mueller. Their arguments are laughable.
"Waste of tax dollars"
"Comey said Trump not under investigation"
"Witch Hunt"
"Mueller not independent because he is hiring Democrats"

On and on. The Rs seem happy to just sweep it all under the rug. How did they get so brainwashed?

5. The difference in that historical comparison is...

that Trump, if he fired Mueller, would not tell his justice department to appoint another special counsel, and the Republicans in Congress would not designate one either.

The normal checks and balances don't operate particularly well when one party, corrupt to its core, holds power in all three branches of federal government.
