11. Upside Down Rainbow Flag?

Anyone ever notice that rainbow flag is upside down that has LGBT for shithead scrawled across it? Makes me wonder if some intern didn't do that as a prop instead of a real share from someone in the community.
Just an ally here but I always make sure that our rainbow flag flies red up as it should.

Translation: Schadenfreude is the most beautiful joy; and the rest of the saying is "...denn sie kommt von Herzen!" (...because it comes from the heart!)

I'm Sabrine and I'm belgian.

Worst week ever?

It is hard to say . Since the Trump's dingbats confrery pretending to be called an administration and ruling a country, have the extraordinary capacity to hit a new low each time you'd think it cannot be worse. It's almost artistic...

As belgian, a feel really sorry for my american friends and all americans undergoing this mascarade.

I'd like to point something I've been countlessly reading since january : it is that USA became a laughting stock to the rest of the world.

Speaking in my own name but I'm sure I'm not the only one, I would say no. No, you are not. The weird thing nowdays called president, yes. But him and only him.

You really did not deserved that mess and hope you will go through as soon as possible. I still looking to the US as a great nation with strong democratic and moral values (even if I don't always agree with some foreign policies, but that's another point).

I'd like to apologize for my poor english and all the mistakes I've certainly done but, alas, I'm not fluent enough in your language to make more elaborate sentences that express my feelings and opinion.

I'm probably looking as childish as Trump . I just hope not as incoherent or unhinged as him .

We are extremely tolerant of our members that are non-native English speakers. The tone of your message is far more important than any errors in spelling or grammar.

Our country did not deserve the menace that was elected as president and the world does not deserve him either. Somehow most of of us will get by while Trump is in office, but our thoughts and prayers go out to those who will be harmed by his administration both here and abroad.

Please feel free to correct me anytime, it would certainly not hurt to improve myself

I share your feelings. In one way, maybe it is not a bad thing that Trump's credibility is close to zero or so (if not negative). It might be prevent some stupid dangerous mooves that will destabilise more than it is currently, some regions of the world.

I really don't get how this pathetic fool still have any supporters. Not only in The US but here too, some brainwashed right wings are strongly persuaded that he's the savior. Watever blinding proofs you show them, they will just answer you : FAKE !

And you have it right, those of us on Democratic Underground have been alternately shocked, scared and angry since Trump became president. I can't say "elected" since we know that he did not get the majority of the votes. And it's not just that he's an embarrassment, but he's putting our relationships with our traditional and oldest allies in jeopardy - which affects the rest of the world. And it seems like every day there's a new scandal and something else to worry about. These are scary times for all of us.

As for your English, it's absolutely fine. Thank you for the kind and encouraging thoughts and we're glad to have you with us!

I see what you mean. We used to have a similar system called "vote sensitaire" in the old days. Not exactly the same but sort of.
It was in the 19th century. Those days where not everyone could read and where lot of people where uneducated. It is what led some people had a vote that worth much assuming that they were knowing what they were doing.

These systems were abolished very early (last of the 19th or early years in 20th) in many countries in Europe.

In my opinion, popular vote is was reflect best who people want to elect. With non offense to anyone, maybe it is time to get rid of the Electoral College?

And we also had a very checkered past when it comes to voting rights, literacy tests, poll taxes, the list goes on - that prevented people from voting. Even now (after the Supreme Court struck down the heart of the 1965 Voting Rights Act), we're seeing all kinds of abuses - changes in polling places and partisan changes to voting districts. You'd think we'd have these issues straightened out by now, but the individual states now have more authority to do whatever they want.

And it's not the first time that we've had these problems. Back in 2000 the Supreme Court decided the election rather than the people - and we paid a heavy price for that. As for the Electoral College, that isn't going away anytime soon, criticized as it's been. Though we are fortunate to have the Constitution that we do since that's one way we have of upholding the law - unfortunately we doubt that Trump has ever even read it.

But right now there's an investigation going on and we're all placing our hopes on that. In the meantime, things get worse every day and it's difficult to be patient.

It is so interestingand enriching to discuss with smart people

I'll try to do my best however

We also encounter problems in our systems. I don't think you will find anywhere on earth a perfect system that will fit everyone. Yes here each vote count as one voice but differencies are in what we call "scrutin proportionnel" (proportional representation) and "scrutin majoritaire" (majoritarian representation). The two systems are worthy but have also issues. Depending of the country, one will fit better than the other but it will never satisfy the entire population. What democracy will do is to pick the one that hurt the less people possible.

Your actual system as was ours in the past (censitary vote), was probably the best choice the founding fathers have done in their time, regarding your country and history.

But now, it looks a bit outground. I guess that will not easy to step forward and get some system that befits the actual era. Even it is not a full guaranty, it will, to a certain point, probably prevent from having a totally incompetent person at the head of the country. Especially when this person has a strong power as it is in the US. It is not the same everywere. In some countries, the presidential fonction is rather a honorary position than a real power position (Germany or Italy for example).

Glad you have a so strong Constitution that will, at least, avoid you the worse. And glad, you had and still had people that sherish and preserves her, keeping her strong and the last barrier to save democraty.

A last point : I doubt Trump have ever read anything about laws in general ou have any clue about how its works. As lawyer, I'm absolutely speechless by his profound ignorance

And I certainly admire those who are fluent in more than one language - which must be true in Belgium especially. I've been overseas and it's not unusual for those in other countries to speak more than one language - especially English. Unfortunately, American schools don't promote languages. I'm afraid they assume everyone speaks English - and they're often right. I took five years of French, but if you don't use it regularly you're likely to forget.

I've voted for every American president since Jimmy Carter - though it wasn't always for the candidate that won - whatever that means anymore. And though I've been disappointed, I never felt afraid like I do now. Some presidents have been better than others - we thought the second Bush* was as bad as it could get.

But what's happening now is unprecedented. We have never had a leader who didn't want to make life better for Americans, had a sense of history and was sincere in making sound decisions - with the help of the most experienced and knowledgeable advisers they could find.

With Trump just the opposite is true. He has no knowledge of government or history and has surrounded himself with those who tell him what he wants to hear. It's as if he treats this most important job like an inconvenient hobby, has no plan, no policy and doesn't care who he offends. The job is supposed to be about diplomacy, but he is incapable of even making an effort. And he insists on "loyalty," yet has loyalty to none even to our international allies. No wonder the rest of the world is upset - not to mention the majority of Americans.

I do trust the system, but we've never experienced anything like this. I think you'll find yourself among kindred spirits here. DU is an international community.
