1. My father-in-law witnessed a nuclear explosion up close.

He was one of the guinea pigs in the Nevada desert who got to march off to ground zero soon after the bomb went off and the mushroom cloud was rising into the sky. They were told not to look at the flash, but they were unprepared for the intensity of the shock wave.

Too many of his fellow soldiers died of cancer and other diseases associated with the experiment.

3. My father was at an above-ground nuclear test in Nevada in 1957.

He DID die of cancer, but that was 43 years later, and all of his siblings died of cancer, too, so who knows?
