(1,105 posts)Try thinking of racism, intolerance, misogyny, etc as a boil on the body politic of this nation. Now we've had that boil hidden under our garments practically from the country's founding. What with what was done to Native Americans, slaves, indentured servants, women, Asians, Mexicans, religious minorities, etc......wow, quite the list.
Let's make it simple, let that nasty carbuncle have grown anytime anyone has judged someone for being a member of a group rather than on the basis of their individual character.
So we've had this boil for hundreds of years. Sometimes it's been red and inflamed and really painful. Sometimes we've put some cream on it and it's felt better. Sometimes it's just seemed quiet and we've denied it's there and ignored it. But all the while it's presence is keeping us from being the healthy, creative, inclusive, positive society we are capable of becoming.
Sooooo.......along comes Trump. Think of him as a hot poultice. He's bringing all these nasty, racist, intolerant, misogynistic, sexist, fearful, purulent haters into the carbuncle and now it's developing a head. Our job is to help pop that super zit!!
If you've ever dealt with these kinds of infections you know how tender, painful, potentially dangerous, and disgusting they can be. How do I know, well I'll give you a hint in HS I was known as "pizza face". But when you get all that pus cleared out and the inflammation resolves, it feels so good.
Then and only then can the healing begin. So as much as it pains me to say it, we as a society may have needed a Trump-like being to force us to confront this aspect of our society, deal with it, and then proceed to heal ourselves so we can move on and become what we are capable of being.
The vision keeps me going these days. It's not Pollyannish because there are real risks, people will get hurt and in this case a young woman paid the ultimate price, and it will hurt all of us to witness the ugly side of our society. But if we can get through it there will be a tremendous feeling of relief and healing.
Hope I've helped.
