Type 3 diabetes is something I'd never heard of before, let alone its connection with Alzheimer's disease, but it's real and documented by no less than the National Institutes of Health: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2769828/

There's been more than case of presumed Alzheimer's disease in my dad's family, but I always thought his dementia didn't follow the usual Alzheimer's progression. Before it got bad and while he still made his own food choices, he avoided sugar (except for 1/4 tsp in his coffee) and ate very little in the way of bread or pasta. He was a meat-and-veggies guy.

With this new information, my opinion that he had vascular dementia rather than Alzheimer's is strengthened. He also had severe peripheral vascular disease, which is consistent with that.

Thanks for the information and the book recommendation.
