It promises worldly power through secret knowledge.

As for Trumpsky's sway over white evangelicals... he didn't create a cult, he just hijacked it. The occasional trumpie I know who isn't evangelical is now seeing that Trump hasn't done squat to fulfill his promises; those guys were merely suckered, not converted. On the other hand, the one group of people I have some personal connection to who are pro-Trump and religious are folks who were already in a notorious cult: the Unification Church. Yup, I have Moonies in my family, and they apparently still think Trump is a godly man.

Interesting thought: Polls show that among atheists it is more important that a public official be moral than it is for White Christian evangelicals.
