Trump is such a a-hole. He's a man of no culture, no interests, no music, no spice-- and he's incapable of loving anything from another culture, or even noticing all the wonderful contributions made by people from other places, and especially Americans who started life somewhere else.
I know this is reductive, but I love to watch food shows (and try without much success to replicate their recipes). Usually about half of the contestants on Top Chef and Chopped -- trained chefs all-- are not native-born, and many of the others are children of immigrants. I realize this is lost on someone who loves Big Macs above all, but the food in our nation is constantly being transformed by immigrants who bring their own food traditions, not to mention native-born chefs who admire other cultures and go there to learn the cuisine and bring it back.
Last week, for lunches, I -- in the downtown of a medium-sized Midwestern city-- got to eat these foods: Cuban. Indian. Japanese. Ethiopian. And of course Mexican, which is so entirely beloved by Americans, we forget that food got invented somewhere else.
That's just one aspect of culture. We can think about music next.
Trump won't. He doesn't care about culture. But the rest of us do.
