4. One reason we could laugh at Archie Bunker is because his troglodyte ideas seemed to be...
...going extinct in this country. And even if such ideas still survived, holding them up for ridicule helped ensure their demise as something publicly acceptable.
But like anti-Semitism in Europe, the disease is never truly extinct -- it bides its time... |

11. That was the hope, however...
...many of us worried that Archie Bunker was given a loud voice that would only embolden those too ashamed to speak up themselves. I did start hearing more 'bunker-isms' in everyday conversation after a few years of the show. I think the producers were hoping the American public would get the irony...they didn't. . |

8. I remembered watching this on television
When 45 spouted off his "big idea" of arming teachers. This tells you that a lot of people never learn lessons about what not to do.
Like arming teachers with guns Like cutting funding in the educational sector Like a whole bunch of other stuff. By the way Am I winning bigly yet or what? ![]() |

9. my grandfather referred to me as "Meathead" for years.
I was 7-10, long before any radicalization. Luckily my sister got to be "Polack". He did it out of love and probably more than a little bit, seeing himself in Archie. He was politically the same, but from the smallest of towns. Black folk he knew and farmed with were fine, but "The Blacks" was another story. He wasn't a gun nut, just a hardworking man raising his family.
That being said about his bigotry in general, when my lesbian cousin(that was enough craziness) got deeply involved with a woman who had a child with a black man previously, there was never a word said or slur uttered. He may have been bigoted about the big picture(of which he knew very little), but he was always a loving human. Sadly, in the 70's, Archie was supposed to be the soon-to-be-dead, shambling ghost of the ignorance and hatred that has now roared back and slowly ripping the fabric of our country. It's like Archie truly did win the presidency, just delayed till 2016. [img] ![]() |

10. Pretty funny, I gotta admit. But on the serious side...
this issue has been going on for a LONG time. And not much has been done. It's gotten worse, with mass shootings on a regular basis, using assault weapons by our own citizens.
