yet more Morning Joe: Anthony Scaramucci on the value of exposing Trump's lies

i think this interview raises some interesting points. Scaramucci and his book promotion are vile, but there is some actual strategic discussion here about whether calling out Trump's "alternative facts" actually has any value.

i'm inclined to agree with "the mooch" that it doesn't help as much as we'd like it to. for one thing, Trump can dish out lies faster than they can be debunked, and trap journalists in the past -- "yesterday's news" if you like. another problem with dissecting a lie (and this is important) is you have to restate the content of the lie to present it for dissection, and you may even need to use the exact same words to present it correctly. so one can easily and quite unintentionally end up doing the propagandists' work for them by spreading the lie in an attempt to expose it.

the third, and most difficult factor to consider, which Republicans love to dwell on and Democrats apparently prefer to ignore, is that the public perceives all politicians as liars. conceivably, from that viewpoint, Trump is well-suited to politics as he lies more openly and prolifically than any of them while throwing all kinds of shade at other politicians and ethnic groups resented by his supporters. he represents, in this sense, a garish critique of the American political process itself.

if Democrats want to win against Trump, we'll need to find a way to present a message of rebuilding hope itself, as it has been so thoroughly corroded over the last 3 years. imho we won't get there by chasing down Trump's negative manipulative behaviors, but we need a message and a messenger to disarm them, maybe bypassing them completely.
