The impetus has to come from the Republicans, both in the House and Senate.
If there's no substantial Republican support in the House, the attempt to impeach will be seen by the RW as a coup and further embolden the hard right, possibly to the extent of violence.
Let's say there's bipartisan support for impeachment and it goes to the Senate. If the Republicans vote in a block, they will stop the veto, which, as above, will embolden the right.
Nixon resigned when he realized that he had lost the support of the Republican Party. At this point, notwithstanding a few Republicans, Trump still has the support of the Party and of his so-called base. Yes, they are crazy and despicable. But they are also dangerous. To say nothing of how they will be encouraged and maybe even financially supported by the hard right billionaires and the Russian government and oligarchy.
Yes, things suck now, and they are going to get worse. We all wake up every day wondering what fresh new hell awaits us, and Trump and his cult followers do not disappoint in this regard. Every. Single. Fucking. Day. But RW legislators, and some portion of the RW base, may/will only be moved to action when they realize that it is their own party that is doing the damage. And as the cannibalize themselves, it may even move some of the crazies to vote D in the 2020. But if the Dems start the process with impeachment, I fear we lose that edge. Yeah, that sucks, and it hurts a lot of people in the meantime, but it is the only way we can rebuild.
