I keep meaning to get back to your previous reply! Here in the North Country the weather is crazy! Last week it was so cold it was painful to go outside! We have mammoth snowbanks here making it impossible to make left turns, not to mention that even on the main roads, we've been driving on packed snow. But now this week it's been over 50! Everything's melting and some roads and parking lots have turned into small lakes. And tonight it wasn't just raining, the fog was really thick even "in town..."

I've been discouraged because my women's group is fading, attendance is way down after over 30 years. Tonight was supposed to be a step meeting, but only two of us showed up. However, we had a latecomer, a young guy who was looking for his first meeting - so we dispensed with the steps and focused on him, we quickly decided between us not to mention the "women's meeting" part, LOL. I sure hope we helped and my friend told me after-the-fact that today is her birthday and the chance to help out a newcomer made the day for her...

You said "we dispensed with the steps and focused on him". At least where I'm from and have traveled, that is a cardinal rule throughout the Program! As you know, newcomers are the most important person in the room. That focus meant a lot to me in the early days. In a meeting in Casper, Wyoming, the normal meeting stopped for the newcomer and we went around the room and each person shared a piece of their story. Very powerful!

I was in a men's group for quite a while (although technically such groups should not exist) and one night a lady dropped in. One fool got up to tell her it was a men-only group and we had to promptly let him know we don't do that, EVER. Generally, though, there was great respect between our group and a parallel lady's group, thereby providing a little more open atmosphere for the shy folks.

You brought back some traveler memories from my trips up North (mostly in Wisconsin) where they plowed the snow toward the middle in small towns. I remember in Tomahawk, WI they cut slots out in the huge bank of snow so you could cross over to the opposite side of the town square. Very rare to call school out up there 'cause they all have large numbers of plows and haulers.

I hope you can somehow attract more attendance to your favorite meeting and I know what you're going through. My last little home group got down to 3 or 4 per meeting for quite a while, and then seemed to just rebuild itself in a few months. I think we started getting people from a treatment center and maybe some were tired of groups that had grown too large. It's also not unheard of to attend other meetings to let them know you need support.

Looking forward to the big thaw! My feet have been cold long enough!....... ..... ......

And I'm grateful to have learned both lessons early on. I'm responsible for coins for the beginners' group - 24 hours to 11 months. And I often tell those who get their 24 hour coin that they're the most important person in the room that day - and that that's the most important coin that they'll ever get since that's all any of us have. I know a lot of people who choose to carry that particular coin.

And the women's group means the most to me since it was my second meeting ever - and that's where I met my sponsor. She actually found me, must have sensed my desperation so she reached out to me and told me what to do - I don't know where I'd be without her.

She also told me that I should always make that meeting my priority. There was always a lot of experience in that room - it's been there for over 30 years and I know more than one woman with more than 30 years who started there. And last March I had the honor of giving a woman a 50 year coin! She started in NYC in the '60s and actually knew Bill and Lois!

So I keep showing up - and the other girl who was with me tonight celebrated her year last October - she's done as well as anyone I've met, so I was grateful that she was there, too. It looked like it was only going to be the two of us when a truck pulled up and this young guy asked if he was in the right place. So she and I just carried on and decided between us not to mention the "women's" part.

I learned early on that this was the right thing to do - no one who needs a meeting is ever unwelcome. I still remember once when a couple of guys, probably tourists, walked in, took a look and walked back out. And the woman I used to celebrate with (until she moved to Florida ) who now has 44 years got up and chased them down the hall and invited them back in.

So we gave this guy a meeting list, he managed to find us by calling the number, hearing the list read aloud and ours was one he remembered. So we recommended meetings we like that are near him and mainly just listened and shared our experiences and what had been helpful to us too. I'm GSR for the beginners' meeting so I know most everyone - and there are two long timers in particular I hope he can meet. On Thursday nights there's a great guy who has taken charge of leading the step meeting for beginners - and I had stopped there earlier to hear him tonight. He and I share the same important date - April 30th - except his is 1976!

Even Fox News doesn't know quite what to do with him.

I love how Seth shows the world the truth about these idiots. How anyone can take them seriously I will never know.

Thanks for posting!
