To protect himself and his family from Putin. Seriously, people who get on Putin's bad side die by violent means.

2. There's no way to know the motivation for lying

he could have been trying to slow down or confuse the investigation with the goal of getting a pardon from trumpft. He could have arrogantly thought that Muellers team didn't have all the information that they have.

As for puting, I would bet that he doesn't care. He is sitting back laughing at the drama.
