....just 10 blocks north of the Dakota.

I remember that night and the week vividly - was watching Monday Night Football when Howard Cosell broke the news. The rest of the week traffic was unbelievable with all the street shutdowns and the people driving into the area to visit the "site".

On Saturday or Sunday (forget which) there was a memorial vigil at the band shell in Central Park near the Dakota. Thousands showed up. There was only a chair set up on the band shell with a portrait of John Lennon and a boom box looping "Imagine" over and over again. Other than that all we heard was a dog or two barking and helicopters overhead. It was eerie. To this day "Imagine" rings in my ears.

And that was when we lost Jerry.

Those were the two losses that hit the rock and roll world the hardest I think, and I'm not sure there's anyone else's passing that will compare, because there just aren't the universally admired icons left anymore ... not that could still be lost in their prime like John was. And Jerry just meant SO MUCH ... to so many people ...

I mean, that's assuming Paul dies of natural causes, long in the future ... THAT will indeed prompt a huge outpouring, but I don't think it'll quite match Lennon's, just because of the tragedy involved. Elton's passing will also be huge, as will Mick's. Clapton's, too. Page & Plant will be gut-wrenching for sure, as will Roger & Pete.

Notice I leave out Keef.

Hiring the Hell's Angels to do security was a bad, bad idea.

And when I look at that whole scene ... the crowd, and sadly even Mick ... it just has freaking speed (and maybe some crappy acid) ... written all over it.

That's straight up nasty power-amp distortion right there, pushing the volume til the speaker surround is about to rip asunder from it's metal frame ...

John is rocking it LIKE A BOSS.

Especially "Don't Let Me Down" on the rooftop.

More recently, if any of you haven't seen Paul McCartney carpooling with James Corden, this is really a treat to watch.
