(1,376 posts)I know he's not a Democrat! neither is Bernie Sanders. And I'm Native so it's nice to see someone of native born running. I WILL vote for a Dem in 2020, but, I CAN like what he says and what he stands for.

(10,749 posts)She follows in her father's footsteps in setting her novels on the Navajo nation. Her descriptions of the landscapes and of the Navajo people - warts and all - is breathtaking. I agree with everything Mark Charles has said, and I hope he gains an audience for his common history, which white Americans either don't know or conveniently have forgotten. I'm not sure he'll gain enough of a presence to split votes away from Dems, but I can understand why he's not running as a Dem. While his own history has been adversely affected by land-owning (or land-stealing) white men, he does not have that common history with his fellow candidates. That said, if a Dem is elected president, I would hope the Mark Charles has a place at the table. We are long past time for reckoning with our genocidal past.
Living in New England, you can't help but encounter Native American names - roads, towns, landscape features. And yet those names could just as well be made up for all the genuine connection to our Native American past.

(60,010 posts)when you hear truth, you know it, and he is so real.
dunno if he will make much of a dent in this critical election, but his voice needs to be part of our gov. at the policy setting level.
I will check into the author, also. thank you.

(1,898 posts)Mr. Charles brings a thoughtful perspective which our politics lost with the assassination of Bobby Kennedy.
Imagine Mr. Charles' influence on the campaign along with the implementation of genuine Lincoln Douglas debates. That would be something to behold!
Although my family heritage is entirely from Western Europe, if I were Navajo or descended from First Nations, I would be PROUD to have Mr. Charles as a relative.

(60,010 posts)I think that is why I am crying after this video. '68 was a year of tremendous losses, which some of us feel even today.
You are correct. It has been far far too long since we heard anything like this (except AOC)
and the heart always recognizes such truths.

I can definitely see him as Secretary of the Interior, and managing the BLM.

(91,020 posts)...as for his presidential run as a non-Democrat. I look forward to his future Cabinet post or candidacy for the House.
