(43,060 posts)I do wonder if every discomfort should involve psychological solution
Surprised she didn't recommend spiritual counseling from clergy
Marriage Encounter last time I checked is a program that facilitates communication
We do need courses on living, negotiating, the inner self, and personal finance
BUT NOTHING GETS THE DEVIL OUT LIKE JACK DANIELS AND AN AK-47!

(37,648 posts)Seriously. It's a shame that people get out of high school without knowing what the word "securities" means, how to invest, what a mutual fund is, etc.
As for Meghan, she was making a joke and letting it be known that free marriage counseling is a strange and bad idea. I agree.

Yang's idea is a good one even though he is not my candidate.

(37,648 posts)YOU send checks unrequested for to various married people, if you want. As for me, NO. I worked too hard for too many decades to start sending money around for superfluous things that people don't need or want.
Do you think there is data showing that marriage counseling has any impact on keeping marriages together permanently? No. Because it doesn't. This is just a shameless "Vote for me, and you'll get a check in the mail, if you're married, "for marriage counseling (wink wink)"
You will defend anything.

(36,818 posts)The first recorded statement of the concept was Abraham Kaplan's, in 1964: "I call it the law of the instrument, and it may be formulated as follows: Give a small boy a hammer, and he will find that everything he encounters needs pounding."

(37,648 posts)A marriage counselor for free for everyone is a stupid idea. Just more free stuff to try to lure voters.

(37,648 posts)Nope.
When campaigning, it's an obvious ploy by politicians of any persuasion. "Vote for me, and I'll give you free stuff! Name your poison!" With no regard for considering whether that bill could actually be passed. It works, which is why politicians do it.
But in this year's Democratic pool of candidates, it's more than that. It has risen to the level of party policy...whatever is burdening you financially, for whatever reason, the Democratic Party will seek to make the govt pay for it. That's different from "we'll fight for the working man...unions....shorter work weeks....health care protections....retirement accounts at your work place....work safety....fair taxes....." To the contrary, some of the candidates want to take away the private health care that workers get through their employers and have lost the concept of protections for workers.
I just have noticed a trend. I hope it's just a reflex to the Trump administration, with there being so many candidates, and combined with having to compete with Sanders, a self-avowed democratic socialist.

(6,699 posts)...to the discussion on The View.
I'm not a big fan of the show, but they are a window to visiting with their guests...some of them worth listening to. But this idiot is almost too much. And she is paid a $1,000,000 a year for "can I say something" and having NOTHING to say worth hearing.
Lord help this idiot. She really feels she is "somebody" worth hearing. She obviously is a confused, extremely entitled piglet who's ONLY claim to fame is that her dad was a Senator that some people feel was "somebody" worth hearing too. A family of nobodies. Money...that's all. Just money.

(6,699 posts)...what's wrong with making it part of mental health in a health plan? Same as personal counseling, as marriage certainly does affect one's own personal mental health.
She is just a dumb ass, and the joke isn't even a "joke"....more like a stupid comment when she can stick her fat thumbs in her ears and make "na na na na" noises.
Mental health should be included in medical plans, same as other medical needs. Maybe we'd have less spousal abuse, less mental explosions ending in innocent people being murdered because someone had no place to turn. This country has ample need for mental health help. We are one seriously sick nation on the whole.
