(11,587 posts)When my grandfather was oversees during the war, he got to meet her and shake her hand. She visited the hospital and spoke with several of the soldiers. He said she was a beautiful person and that her visit was the best medicine he could've gotten. He also said that if she'd ever run for president he would've voted for her in a heartbeat.

(34,195 posts)I met Steve Allen and his wife Jayne Meadows around 1983 when she was performing in a play at the Old Globe Theater, Balboa Park, San Diego.
I was working the front desk at the hotel where they were staying and each evening when they returned from the theater theyd stop by the desk to check for messages and mail.
They were the nicest people youd want to meet; they acted more like your friendly neighbor than the celebrities and stars they were.
Sometimes wed talk for about 10 minutes about everyday things (the price of bread; kids today; etc).
Just downright nice decent folk.

(16,254 posts)Apparently, she either had motor problems or got stuck in the mud and was unable to remedy the situation. Her solution was to stand by her vehicle and yell for help. The story was that some people who heard her were trying to figure out what she was yelling about and what the emergency was. One man said he couldn't figure it out, but that it sounded like Eleanor. Sure enough! They found her and took care of the dilemma.

(14,566 posts)An aside - I'll bet that guy on the commercial that shaved his two-week stubble with that antique Remington electric razor had to use about a gallon of lotion to get rid of the razor burn when he was done with that.
Well....at least there wasn't blood dripping so you could see it.
